    Hi, I'm confused and have issues with my ELD. I tried to reach out to the company's training department but they can't answer literally a single question, there're kids that have no clue what their job is. If possible please someone explain to me how it's properly done and according to the law. So far I understand that I'm required to take 30 min (no later than 8 hr) and 10 hr break each day, and also I can't drive more than 11 hr and work in general for 14 hr a day.

    Recently I couldn't submit my 30 min break on the tablet cause it's turned off and now I just took 10 hr break in time (I had about 20 min left on my clock) and I got message in my tablet that is DOT violation. Also my 14 hr clock says -23 min, what that means? Am I doing something wrong? Also what if I can't submit my break time or anything else on my tablet because it's not working properly?

    About pre-trip and post trip inspections. In my tablet you have to do pre-trip before taking each load but there isn't such a thing as post-trip in the Workflow app. I'm trying to understand what the procedure is:
    1. To do pre-trip and post-trip I have to be on duty with pre/post trip activity?
    2. I have to go to DVIR manually to submit pre/post-trip?
    3. For the pre-trip in the Workflow app for some reason I have to go to the Workflow and then click on DVIR because otherwise if just go directly to DVIR it won't submit in the Workflow and I won't be able to proceed with my load and paperwork.
    4. When you do pre/post trip how much time you're required to spend, like 15 min or it doesn't matter? It has to be on my tablet marked as on duty doing pre-trip for 15 min?
    5. Pre/post-trip must be submitted no later than every 24 hr? This part confuses me and it's hard for me to track the time. I have to deal with garbage equipment and I get tired physically and emotionally.

    I think so far this is the most important part to understand and do properly. All I want is not to get in trouble. Please help me to understand everything cause the company I work for is a joke. I spend 3-4 days waiting in the shop and maybe 1-2 loads a week. And looks like I got DOT violations on my tablet, I'm assuming I have to wait 7-8 days now to get rid of it.

    I’m going to offer a bit if important advice, take it a bit seriously.

    First it sounds like a cheap company. Think about finding a better company.

    But that said the company is supposed to provide you with instructions on how the unit works, this is a federal regulation that the carrier provides you with written instructions on how to use the unit and implied to instruct and support you to solve problems with the use of any eld. If there is any malfunction, like shutting down, then you go to paper immediately, do not mess around, COVER YOUR BUTT!!

    Don’t worry about what’s on the tablet, right now I would cover your butt by going to paper, go back 7 days and tell them the device is malfunctioning, no dot violation on you.

    if your company gives you crap about it, report them to the fmcsa. There is a consideration that if they don’t resolve these issues and harass you over it, it is breaking the regulations.

    § 395.22 Motor carrier responsibilities—In general.
    (h) In-vehicle information. A motor carrier must ensure that its drivers possess onboard a commercial motor vehicle an ELD information packet containing the following items:

    (1) A user's manual for the driver describing how to operate the ELD;

    (2) An instruction sheet for the driver describing the data transfer mechanisms supported by the ELD and step-by-step instructions for the driver to produce and transfer the driver's hours-of-service records to an authorized safety official;

    (3) An instruction sheet for the driver describing ELD malfunction reporting requirements and recordkeeping procedures during ELD malfunctions; and

    (4) A supply of blank driver's records of duty status graph-grids sufficient to record the driver's duty status and other related information for a minimum of 8 days.

    I've been several times in the shop requesting to fix the tablet, they did nothing. I have those blank drivers records but I don't know how to use them and now how do I remember all my time for the last 8 days to write down on piece of paper.

    That is part of your training before you start operating a cmv. You have to know what is required of you. It is on you to know this. Yes it seems you are working for a unqualified company who is not concerned with you being trained properly. It is also on you as well because you have a cmv license. It is on the both of you. You have to bring yourself up to speed on how to fill out logs if your tablet is not working. You have to make your company fix the equipment as well. It might be time to find a different company

    Normally, you can have your safety department print out your previous 8 days' logs. Then continue on paper until the device is fixed. Of course that won't do you much good if the device has been malfunctioning. That's why it is important to switch to paper as soon as the device malfunctions.

    But the bigger problem is, you need to know how to use a log... that's a pretty fundamental part of the job. Also sounds like your company's safety department (if they have one) has some learning to do.

    I'm not making fun of you, but I'm awfully curious who gave you a CDL without teaching you how to log.

    OK keep documenting it, cover your butt.

    So learn, it isn't hard, hell it has been around since 1948, with the hundrends of YouTube vidoes, right now there isn't a reason why.

    As for you remembering, well thats something you have to ask your company to help you with but what does the ELD package have to say?

    This is common... this is someone who WAS given the instruction and I'm willing to bet, the training materials... its common and easy to fall back on the "They's and Them's" when they didn't hold up their end. I provided a link to videos from the ELD system that the driver is trying to use. The fact that the driver seems to have little to no idea how the HOS works in the least, its time to refer first to the FMCSR Section 395 and let them sink or swim.
