Sometimes I'll grab one of those sandwiches out of the cooler and quite often the clerks are baffled that I didn't grab one from under the heat lamp...

Yeah, I'll buy you one if you want to eat it.

Yeah! Go to Wal Mart buy your health food, purchase a microwave, or convection oven/microwave combo, a small grill, and have a healthy meal. Maybe you should look in the menu better as many truck stops with restaurants are serving better , healthier food items. These are your two choices as i see it. Good luck. Better yet, maybe find a 9-5 job at home, and end of problem. No one ever said that being a "freight relocation engineer" was a job for all, and never was it ever stated that it was the healthiest food on the highway.

Thankfully, our Freightshakers came equipped with refrigerators and APU's. I usually take my crockpot on the road with me, stock up on stew beef or chicken, veggies, rice and spices. Just throw together a stew or casserole, stick it in the crockpot at the start of my shift and, by the end of the day, dinner's served. It's way healthier, cheaper, and convenient. The only drawback is trying to drive a full shift without being distracted by the aroma of chicken-and-sausage gumbo wafting through the cab.

Go to the truck stops that have real restaurants like Country Pride, Iron Skillet, or Denny's. You're complaining about the food that you get in the truck stop store itself. I only eat that in emergencies.

Country Pride and the Iron Skillet shouldn't even exist. Those two serve the nastiest food I've ever had. Their stuff is oily, undercooked, tasteless, greasy, and their buffet items are gross. They oil and salt everything to give it taste.

    No way.

Have you been to a Waffle House or Waffle Hut? These make Iron Skillet and Country Pride seem ok. It's all a matter of what you order. Some things you are opening yourself up to more fat/grease/salt then others. As a general rule I stay away from buffets, but there are things on the buffet that are much more "healthy" then others. But eating one or two "unhealthy" meals a week is not going to kill you.

OTH, consuming 2,500 calories of ANYTHING every day, is going to make you fat. Doesn't make a difference if it is ordered custom cooked, at the buffet, or out from behind the glass under the hot lamp, or off of a grill roller, or out of the freezer.

Point is, limit your bad choices and you'll be ok. Tuna and crackers and a cheese stick and a bottle of water, is actually not bad, and is easy. I refuse to "cook" in my truck but if others want to, that's fine. But many say "I eat healthy every day, and cook in the truck". Ok. But I suspect they are not eating as "healthy" as they think they are. "Mom's cooking" is good and it's healthier then eating out, but it will make you fat and fail physicals, fast, just the same.

Bottom line is you need a rounded diet of a variety of foods, avoid as many "processed foods" as is reasonable, and eat "bad foods" in light moderation. Do that, and you can eat almost anything and not worry about it.
