I'm not a flatbed driver, but I've seen lots of advertisements for 27% of load pay, with weekends home. The percentage pay seems like a great deal, but I'm wondering how honest these companies are with the weekend hometime. I've seen several drivers on YouTube who drive for these companies and opt to stay out longer for more $, but claim that if you wish to be home weekends these companies will make it happen.

How much would weekend hometime cut into your pay? Is it a true weekend spent at home (i.e. get home friday night/evening and leave out monday morning)?

Looking to see what you flatbedders in the industry have to say about this, and if anyone here works for this kind of company.

    Thanks.

The key to success in percentage pay is getting money on the truck. And that depends on a lot factors. What kind of rates does the company command? How,good is your dispatcher at planning your truck? How dependable are you as a driver? And how available are you if something really good pops up?

My carrier is generally a regional, home weekends kinda carrier. Heck, I'm about the ONLY driver in my outfit who will sacrifice a weekend for REALLY good money.

Normally (weekends home), I can gross at $1,200-$1,600/week of I work the entire Monday - Friday schedule with no hiccups. No breakdowns or customers playing games. That's doing straight steel haul, which I love. But I will happily admit there are easier, better ways to make money in flatbed, too! Even TMC drivers pull $1,500 to $1,800/week and still hit the house on weekends.

Just be prepared to boogie out Sunday to make that critical first drop on Monday morning! First one empty usually gets best pick of freight rolling.

I dont see how guys live only seeing home 34hrs a week. Personally I dont see the point. By the time you get laundry done, shower, throw the frisbee for the dog, give your wife some luvn,.. its time to roll back out.

To me thats no life. I'de rather be out 4 - 5 weeks and take 7 - 10 days off. That way I have time to do all that,.. plus hang out with friends, get some time at the track with my car, maybe do some mudding or take the Wave Runners out for a day. Go see some live music and have a good meal. More to life than living in a truck.

    Thats just me.

the pay for me, as only one example, is a modified salary. i am not a flat-bedder, but a dedicated van account.

for a driver to make money on percentages or miles, he/she should be out more than one week, maybe two at least.

for a dedicated account, i get weekends off, as well as all holidays, and i make a very livable wage.

others may not like a "salary" over earning more, but i like it, been doing dedicated for years, and WILL NOT go back OTR or regional (over-nighters)

That or you could lock them both in the trunk of her car and see which one is happy to see you in an hour?

Depends entirely on the company. I run loads into the WI, IL, IN, OH area, with a reload back up into southern Ontario then come back through Ontario with another load to home base in Winnipeg.

We have runs that go west in Canada, sometimes down to TX and the MA/PA region but our bread and butter is the steel region near the lakes.

Average trip is 2900 miles and when everything lines up just right, takes 5 days.

It all depends on what kind of contracts the company is fulfilling and how important driver morale is to them.

Resets at home do a whole lot more for happy drivers than on the road.

Argh, now I've got a chemical tanker company wanting to interview. I've been a pneumatic sand hauler for a while now wanting to go either flatbed or tanker.

I feel like I'm at a fork in the road and not sure which way to go o_O
