I am trying to hire a driver to haul my 5th wheel travel trailer from billings,mt to lancaster,ca; what kind of credentials and licenses should this person have? Do they just need a MC # or do they also have to have a DOT license? Is a commercial drivers license needed? Thanks

Hotshotters won't want to bother with a 5th wheel trailer . They pull flatbeds so they can get return loads . Better to go to the websites of Horizon Transport , Quality Transport , or Hoosier Transport . They are RV transport companies that have contractors begging for work right now .
You could also post it on U-ship . They do have legal haulers but make sure you check out their DOT number at www.safersys.org for contact info . If you click the safestat online link at safer it'll give complete safety history Some U-ship service providers give phony DOT numbers .

Though some of your information may be correct, the part I did not cut out is not. NOT all hotshots pull trailers, some of them pull RV trailers to sites and drop. Then they are looking for another RV or trailer to be pulled to another destination.

I moderate a hotshot forum . RV transporters are NOT hotshotters . Neither are auto transporters or LTL carriers . Hotshot is hauling time sensitive freight . Hotshotters are ready to go on a moments notice with critical freight . But it is true not all hotshotters pull trailers . Some working oil patch just use flatbeds .

Sorry to correct you , but now days hot shot trucking is anything less than truck load, campers, expedite freight, or anything a 3/4 ton to single axle tractors with a single axle trailer or even a tractor with a 40' gooseneck. Back in the old days yes but now it's all one industry within trucking. Like specialized hauling in with class 8 trucks have become more then just one kind of specialized freight.
