"Hey big man, let me hold a dollar" is a quote from Dub (RIP) on the John Boy and Billy Big Show from 20 years ago. While the quote isn't about the show, it is about truck stop beggars.

How many times do truckers, especially owner-operators get hit up with "let me polish your wheels" routine? It seems you can't go into a major truck stop without someone offering to polish your wheels, even when they obviously don't need polishing. I have encountered some "polishers" who don't even have their own equipment and want to barrow the materials. I did this once, only to have the guy polish everyone else but mine.

Once in a great while I will pay a guy to polish my wheels, but most of the time I try to avoid them all together. It used to be that lot lizards were the ones knocking on the doors, but now it is the wheel polishers. I have considered putting a sign on my windows "NO SOLICITING". Think it would do any good?

What is everyone else's take on the polishing situation? Do you have your wheels polished or do you just tell them "no thanks"? I am not angry at these people, just annoyed that I get hit up at #### near every truck stop.

Normally do them myself, so no I dont use the polishing guys.
I would rather them try to earn some money than rip someone off myself. Polishing is not an easy job after all.
Politely saying no has always worked for me, with no bad feelings.

I was at the TA in Baldwin, FL. So, I let a guy polish my wheels. He said his wife was stopping by to get money so she could buy medicine for their kid. He had polished the left side. Said he would like for me to pay him then so he could give money to wife. Of course he said he would be right back. I gave him $70 and never saw him again. He left his rags, polish, and jacket. I ended up polishing the passenger side myself, just to get it done and avoid the reminder that I got ripped off. I even left his jacket hanging on a bush.
What a loser you have to be to not finish what would have taken 1 hour to finish.

It is best not to hire these bums. I have learned this lesson twice now. If they were good, responsible workers they would not be where they are.

The less people that give them money, the less of them we have to put up with. From my experience, most beggars are liars.

I'll rarely part with cash... and almost always offer food in it's place.

More often than not an offer of food discourages most which is no coincidence.

You might be surprised at what some of these characters haul in...

I polish my truck myself its not easy but I'm not going to pay somebody to do it for me at a truck stop. I have a truck wash that will polish my tanks when they need to be sanded as I don't sand my tanks, I also have a place to do my wheels when they're to the point where they need to be buffed with more than a rag polish and a lot of elbow grease. I have the equipment to buff my own tanks the sanding is all I don't do. I don't trust the bulbs at truck stops that always want to polish crap. I'd love to hear one advertising for tank polishing when I had an army tank on my flatbed. Here $150 get to polishing. Watch him walk over to an already shiny fuel tank. Hey not those tanks the one on my trailer.:biggrin_2559:

I also do it myself when at home or sat.
When at home, I can bribe the 16yr old to do it though, and the wife waxed all the paintwork today!

You are spoiled, there is no way my wife would polish the paint or aluminum. I can get my son to help me though, he doesn't seem to mind it.
