I need help, I am unaffected by caffeine. I am one of those lucky people that can drink a Mountain Dew right before bed and sleep like a baby. I tried those 5 hour energy and they only last me 45 min. to 1 hour Max. And you are only supposed to take 2 in a 24 hour period. I can’t be the only one out there with this problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also I run team with my wife, and we do allot of “High Value” loads as the company calls them, so stopping is a pain because we have to call in each time. I know if it comes to me stopping or falling asleep behind the wheel I would stop. But we drive an automatic and I need some ideas to liven up my shift.

Only a consistent routine is going to ultimately train your body to shift it's circadian rhythm to night active, day rest. And some may never be able to get to where they can sleep 7 hours well during the day and remain fully alert for a 12 hour shift at night no matter how long they stick to a consistent routine. You can't always rely on caffeine or other "stimulant" to keep you alert dark hours, long-term.

Have you tried a 2:00 am - 2:00 pm schedule? Many of the 24 hour gravel haulers do this as they've found this to be the favored compromise by slip-seat drivers for both shifts.

I'm the same way I can drink a Liter of Mountain Dew and sleep like a baby. But I do not have trouble staying up at night as long as I have slept good.
Maybe you're not getting good sleep?

With me 1st and foremost to last through the night I have to have enough sleep. If I have to drive through the night I get no less than 8 hours of sleep. I drink alot of ice water which probably keeps me up. Even though people say you shouldn't do it i listen to my music turned all the way up. My terrible attempt at singing keeps me entertained and if I get to bored I get on the CB and try and find someone to talk to but I rarely get a response.

I just put my earbuds in and blast away.

Or..... I just remind myself that the truck Is moving so it's $$$ time. Then I think of all the stuff in going to buy.

Then I realize I'm dreaming and my wife will spend it.

Then I get depressed because I'm a dullard.

Best thing is a constant routine as mentioned above like a 2 to 2 shift and same for the other person. It worked for me while driving team with my wife for a year. I used to drink mt dew sparingly to help but here are some other things. Drink ice water only as mentioned above and do not keep it too warm in the cab. its better to be cool than warm as warm will make you sleepy. Keep a window cracked also. Dont eat too much, just snack as a full meal will make you sleepy. Make sure you get a steady 7-8 hrs of sleep each day. Make sure to stop every 150 miles or so and step out of the truck and get the circulation going. These things helped me keep alert and drive that ugly night shift.
