I have three cross country loads that leave from NY go to Vegas and then return to NY after a week layover in Vegas. I posted on here approx. a month ago about these loads did not get much feedback. The loads are going out two weeks from now. So I'm getting closer and need to submit to my acct. approx. what they are gonna run per. load. I have not done this kind of work in 10 yrs. due to bad economy. My acct. has picked up an old customer and we will be starting this run up again. I went back in my files and see that 10 yrs ago I did it for $12,250. I spoke with my acct. and submitted a rate of $13,500 per trailer am I in the ball park? Freight is dry van so no running the refer. If I am going to adjust this rate I need to do it soon b/c my acct. will build 15% of shipping into the bill for transportation. I have till this coming week to have a hard number. I don't wanna kill my customer they are my house acct. and I do not haul for anyone else besides an occasional back haul. With that being said I need to make money and decent money. I will take two of the loads then I will broker the third out. So, I would like to hire a o/o to run with me and pay around $11,500 for the round. I mean I know I could find someone for less but I need to find nice clean polished equipment for the event and someone who can present themselves in the proper manner for the week on the layover.
I would like input from guys who run cross country and have an Idea of freight rates on both sides of the country.
Thanks,

$15,000 for the round trip isn't bad i think as long as you cover hotel and meals while on the layover. And I'm not talking some motel, but maybe not a place on the strip. I just spent a week in Vegas and the Golden Nugget was very nice and cheap with lots to do on Fremont St. And only $20 for a 3 day pass on the Express to the strip.
loads from vega to ny are available, but the rates are around $2.75 mile, same as the loads out to Vegas. The problem you will run into is the layover. -
I sense the O/O you want is required to stay close to his trailer for the week layover. Besides being polished and a good representative for your customer. Do you have a plan to compensate him for the week ?

Alright so $18,000 would probably put me more in the blue column. That sounds about right with the miles and layover. The loads are not coming out of the city its out of NJ from the storage warehouse. The company is based in NY. 18 will give me some room to find a decent carrier to run out with one of my drivers and myself.
SHC Thanks this. -
Once we are out there we will be off for the week. I have a couple of things that I need to do, but that has nothing to do with the drivers. We are staying at the Orleans which is already included for the week. Food and alcohol is not included, nor is gambling. That is gonna come out of driver's pocket.

If I was bidding a job like this, I would say $2.10/mile on the trucking = $11,000.
It's a little unclear what the drivers duties are once you get to Vegas, does he just drop the trailer and come back in a week ? Or helping unload, reload, etc. ??
I would normally bid $500/day waiting x 7 = $3500. And $45/hr for any additional duties such as loading and unloading.
But, you know, it is Vegas, and we all like to go to Vegas. So you may be able to find somebody to go cheaper. You might want to pay half when you get there and half when you get ready to leave to insure the driver has $$$ left for fuel to get you back to NY !! good luck. -
It may be a good idea to find some kind of short run out of Vegas and back instead of sitting. My opinion is not to promote this position as a fun kind of trucking holiday; otherwise you will not recruit truely professional drivers. Maybe a broker can find something to keep you busy and the truck making at least a money for the week (unless the shipper unerstands that they will need to pay for that truck sitting). One would have to consider what the truck could make by running 5 days in between loads.

For the layover is the driver required to be present for the week. Is the trailer unloaded so he could work a few short trips in the mean time or pick up some power only loads.
If you will not allow him to pick up another load he needs to be compensated for that but you should also put restrictions on what he can do. You are not paying for his vacation. -
Pick me, pick me!
dannythetrucker and SHC Thank this.
