some states such as OH, MO, etc... require some documentation from your insurance company. Be prepared to add a day or two to your permit ordering experience if that is the case.... depending on how quick your insurance company is. My insurance company apparently these sort of "requests" go to one persons inbox and when they eventually get to it get's sent to someone elses inbox, repeat this two or three times til it finally reaches someone who may be on vacation, etc.... the states themselves can "normally" be counted on to issue the permit within 24 hours, often same day as long as the form is filled out correctly and any additional documentation or registration is in place.

it can be a pain at first, and many companies charge well more than 15.00, comdata can order permits.
I used to run 8 mobile home toter trucks and ordered permits for them everyday, but we also had annual permits for up to 14' wide, ga was 500.00 a year per truck for this.
honestly , unless you are going to be ordering permits on a daily or at least 3 times a week, it wont be worth the hassle.
if you really want to do it, start slow , with your current state and work out from there,
many of the states you simply fill out the form online and send in, some you print , fill out and send in. -
Sammons trucking has a comprehensive list of all the states license/permit requirements at http://www.sammonstrucking.com/docs/PermitBook.pdf that might be of some help and worth a read.
Cant say how up to date they keep it but it appears current.
Probably easiest to just hire a permit service as others have said.Last edited: Aug 27, 2013

I use Comdata for all my permits with everything done online and submitted.
Link to Comdata for permits: http://www.comdata.com/solutions/-regulatory-compliance-solutions/permits-pilot-cars/permits
I also recommend having a computer with internet hooked to a printer/scanner to order and get permits anywhere.
A great book you can buy at most truckstops...

I look at it this way, some states are very easy to order your permits direct, some make it difficult. A permit service does this all day long, they know where you need city permits, possibly better routing, and can get them done quick while you're driving. They are accountable if there is a screw up. Mine get emailed to my phone, so if I'm waiting on a permit I know as soon as it comes in. When I calculate permit costs on a load, I add in the $14 I get charged. That's $70 extra for a 5 state load, and I just have to make one phone call, they already have all my info stored, and I can get on with my day. It's especially beneficial when I'm permitting a load from home, as I'd much rather be doing something non-truck related. Annual permits are nice for repeat loads or for your home area. I have FL and used to have GA until they changed the rules last year.

Every state has a web address to order permits. You will need the width, length, height, weight and all your axle spacings.
