I have received a job offer to begin hauling hay (Nevada, Oregon, California, Idaho & Kansas) and was told I would receive 25% of the gross. My question is gross what: per mile? or load? I was told hay hauling pay is comparable to Hazmat pay...any truth to that? I've never hauled hay and I am not familiar with the pay standards. I was also told I would average 3 loads a week (no weekends unless I wanted it) and would make at least $1000 per week...does that sound correct?

    Welcome to the party!

Percentage is of what the load pays. That sounds pretty good and pretty accurate as far as the pay.

I was told that this company charges $40 per ton and each load is approximately 32 tons. For example: 25 ton load x $40 = $1000. My share is 25% or $250 per load. I know that there is more to it than that but, I was given a guarantee (that will be in writing when I start) that I will make a minimum of $950 per week driving loads just one way. If I pick up freight on the return trip (which I was told happens 95%) I will also get paid for those as well (obviously).

    Thanks again,

Good deal that you will have a guarantee in writing. Sounds like a good outfit as far as their pay and backing it with an agreement. Hopefully the rest is as good! Keep us posted on things!

Did I read that correctly ?

You can make 1K a week, by just being paid for 1 way trips, return trips (if loaded) pay extra ??

And each load may weight 32 tons=64000 pounds ??

Darn good deal, making 1K a week and home on weekends !!!!

    You haven't started yet ??!!

    Good Luck !!

Again,I have to be the bummer of the group, but, really, that does sound like recruiter talk to me.:biggrin_25511: And yes,I have hauled hay,but I don't brag about it.Although not an owner-op,I do know it is a load taken out of almost desperation,as it does not pay very well..At least not in the Midwest..Good luck man.

Thanks again for all of your comments and advice. I plan to call and speak with the company tomorrow and ask them some of the questions that have been raised in this thread. If my questions are answered and I am satisfied, then I plan to start working for this company after the July 4th weekend. I feel that I'm a good judge of character and after speaking with the owner of the company (small family owned business), I am confident that he was speaking truthfully with me. With the promise of a nice weekly paycheck, I can't/shouldn't pass up this opportunity...right?

    Thanks again,
