So. Good day to all. I am looking to get information regarding heavy haul.
It is my opinion, there are several levels of heavy haul. Heavy haul consists of loads above 80K or loads that are oversized/over dimension.
That being said. in order to carry weights between 80-120K, my questions is kinda general.
Can I use a Volvo, with a cummins ISX 500-600 hp, 18 speed tractor with a 13K -16K front end and 46K axles to do the job. Gear ratio is 3.58 to 3.70.
Thanks

Yes, you'll be fine...... I have more or less the same specs and have hauled 107k with the truck for 6 years.
I would guess your using a 3 axle trailer .....Warren Earp Thanks this. -
I haven't purchased the trailer yet, but, we are looking at something in that relm. RGN Double drop if possible.
I know others out there love Petes and KWs, but, I like how the Volvo drives. I don't know if heavy duty frames are an option for Volvo 670/780s -
Has anyone out there seen a dual rear axle Volvo with an additional tag axle that can be raised??
-
Not a tag, but I have saw one with a pusher.
Also heard (two summers ago) from a HH trucking manager out of Montana, that the Kenworth Drivers with ISX's were crying pretty badly because the new Volvo's with D16's were walking away from them on hills, each with the same trailer and load. -
Got a buddy of mine with a D16. Had his air compressor break off while under a load north of Las Vegas. The repairs at the Volvo dealer hit him for $16.5k.
-
Wow. think think that's bad, Here is one worse. An 18 speeed transmission is about 10K to replace. Reman Transmission. Well, I heard if you blow up an Ishift transmission (Saw this happen at a Volvo Dealer) the replacement transmission was 30,000 dollars. The owner forgot to monitor transmission fluid and it was low. The clutch siezed up, burned up the transmission. All components were locked up.
30K?? Hell, I can buy a used Volvo for that price. I like Volvos, but, when they break, they break hard. I have not come across a person with a D16 who liked it completely. I hear they pull strong, but, fuel mileage sucks.
Since the winter has hit, I'm getting about 6.0 to 6.5mpg with my Cummins. (overall) (Not the same Volvo mention in the start of this thread) I thought when I had a valve adjustment, I lost fuel mileage. well, I think the loss was due to the engine not getting up to operating temp due to outside temps. I have not found a weather front for the Volvo yet. -
I don't care what you have under the hood, you start rolling down the road with 6 or 7 axles and north of 90,000lbs you can kiss that 6mpg number goodbye.
IH Truck Guy, Caterpillar Cowboy, passingthru69 and 5 others Thank this. -
It's not mpg, but gpm
Oscar the KW, The Challenger, Cetane+ and 1 other person Thank this. -
