I have a question on what and who the Carrier is because it sounds the same as The Driver.

Definition the CDL book gives me:

    << The Carrier
    * Takes the shipment from the shipper to its destination.
    * Prior to transportation, checks that the shipper correctly described, marked, labeled, and otherwise prepared the shipment for transportation.
    * Refuses improper shipments.
    * Reports accidents and incidents involving hazardous materials to the proper government agency.

    The Driver
    * Makes sure the shipper has identified, marked, and labeled the hazardous materials properly.
    * Refuses leaking packages and shipments.
    * Placards vehicle when loading, if required.
    * Safely transports the shipment without delay.
    * Follows all special rules about transporting hazardous materials.
    * Keeps hazardous materials shipping papers and emergency response information in the proper place. >>

Doesn't the driver take the shipment from the shipper to its destination? So, I'm a little confused. Can anyone straighten me out? Before I go take my hazmat test.

you as the driver have the final say in whether or not that load moves. you represent the carrier.

you take the load, and you know before hand there is a problem, YOU get nailed first.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is what is everyone's definition of the Carrier vs the Shipper?

OK, I see your confusion here. The shipper is the company or individual who is sending the load out.
The carrier is the company that is taking the load from the shipper to the loads destination.
The load is being shipped from the shipper, on the carrier, to the consignee at the loads destination.
The driver is merely the employee of the carrier. BUT, he is the "captain of the ship," as it were, and he is the one whose pee pee is going to get spanked if he does not comply with all the rules and regulations.

Thanks, Big Don.. I don't start my CDL Academy till Aug. 20th. So, I'm going into this carrier knowing nothing. Which I hope will help me. My last carrier I was a hot head, had an attitude because I knew to much about the trade. This one I don't know anything about. So, I hope it works out. Now I can say I really don't know anything and mean it... lol

carrier is the company that transports the shipment. shipper is the company that you picked up at and the receiver or consignee is where the shipment you drop at. you are the driver. hope this helps.

You are the representative of the Carrier (you're driving the rig). You are responsible (HazMat or otherwise) for the proper documentation, placarding and transporting of the materials (as well as how they are placed in your trailer). I do remember that question (just renewed mine in July).
