Hey fellas I've got a quick question. It's been 5 years and it's time to renew my license and hazmat. I currently do not need the endorsement as my employer doesn't require it. But I'm not going to let it fall off.
As my memory serves me correctly, I take the test at the DMV and then submit my app for the TSA background check and fingerprints? I can't remember and the info on the website is vague. I'll probably go to the DMV this week as the rains in CA may park me a day or two.
My license/Hazmat doesn't expire until mid March. I also need to renew my TWIC by June. I believe that the renewal cost is discounted if you have an updated hazmat. I know I could probably get these questions answered at the DMV but I would rather ask y'all and have an excuse to start a new thread.![]()

Depends on your state, but fingerprints first, then test. And you get to pay twice for fingerprints if you need to update your TWIC. At least that is how it works in OK>

Your best bet is to go to the DMV. I see you are out of Baltimore so... Frederick DMV would come to mind as a good facility to get your questions answered without the hassle of Glen Burnie of the old days. Westminster has one too but it's not really a CDL Facility, although I got my 1994 first stamp CDL there. A simple surrender of class A changed to CDL.
There is also Enhanced Licensing coming on to mandatory in a few years by 2020 for us here in Arkansas. -

MA it's fingerprint and background first...then test. TSA sends letter to RMV saying you are all set, then you can take HazMat. HazMat stays on license for the 5 years your license is good for.

It would be nice if TWIC went the same date as your license. Now TWIC expires in one year, license/HazMat in other year, med card in another year. Seems to me like it's another way of trying to make carriers go out of compliance.

The way Md. hazmat renewal works is you go to the DMV,(I always use Bel Air)they fingerprint you,and you take the test at the same time,and they issue you your renewal on the spot.I asked,what if my fingerprints come back bad(they wouldn't).They said,if there's a problem,we'll find you.
Again this is Md.,and my latest renewal,last year.
When I first got my hazmat here,which was many years ago,when this jazz first started,you got fingerprinted first,then had to wait till it cleared before you take the test.

The Hazardous Materials Endorsement Threat Assessment Program conducts a threat assessment for any driver seeking to obtain, renew and transfer a hazardous materials endorsement on a state-issued commercial driver’s license. You should apply if you have a state-issued CDL and you are required to transport materials that require placarding under the Department of Transportation hazardous materials regulations.

Complete the online application or you can complete the entire process in person at an application center unless you are from any of the following states:
Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin, in which case, you should visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles for application and fingerprinting information.
Schedule an appointment online or by calling (855) 347-8371 weekdays, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET. Walk-ins are welcome but appointments take priority.
Visit an application center to:
- Provide required documentation and fingerprints. Bring your current U.S. passport or a driver’s license and birth certificate. See other acceptable documents.
- Pay a non-refundable fee valid for five years with a credit card, money order, company check or certified/cashier’s check.
- New applicant: $86.50
- New applicant reduced rate: $67*
- You can check your status online at any time.
Reduced rate applicant must already possess a valid TWIC card and be licensed in a state that accepts the TWIC threat assessment in place of the one for the HAZMAT endorsement.
Eligibility
You may apply if you are a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, naturalized citizen or a nonimmigrant alien, asylee or refugee who is in lawful status and have a CDL issued by a U.S. state. Remember to check with the state in which your license is issued for additional citizenship or lawful presence requirements stricter than TSA’s before applying.

The Transportation Worker Identification Credential, also known as TWIC®, is required by the Maritime Transportation Security Act for workers who need access to secure areas of the nation’s maritime facilities and vessels. TSA conducts a security threat assessment (background check) to determine a person’s eligibility and issues the credential. U.S. citizens and immigrants in certain immigration categories may apply for the credential. Most mariners licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard also require a credential. Thanks all. I'm from MD so it used to be so easy. I could go to the MVA and get my hard copy license that day. Now I live in CA so it's kind of screwy over here. I'll let y'all know this week (if I get rained out) how it works out here. My memory just isn't as good as it was 5 years ago apparently.
