Hey all, I'm looking for metal hazmat placards (you know, the flip kind with the changeable numbers in the middle). I need to have Combustible Liquid 3 as one of them. However..... all I can seem to find are placards with Flammable 3 on them.
So, my question is: can I use a Flammable 3 placard with a Combustible 3 load? (The placards both have the flammable symbol on the top corner, but the Combustible placard has a red background, white bottom, with a red 3, while the Flammable placard has an all red background, with a white 3.)
Thanks for the input.

No HazMat stuff is pretty strict and you need to obey exactly what they outline for the law.. Cause if something happened with your load and say the fire deparment or the hazmat teams needs to come they will be expecting a flammable liquid and not a combustible liquid which could blow up and they wouldn't even know it...

you need to placard the vehicle the same way it is stated on the bills. the shipper does that for you all you have to do is placard the vehicle as per the bills. they should furnish the proper paper placards for you. you might try a good trailer shop if you want the metal ones. i know those paper ones can be a real problem if someones sticks them to the side of the trl. lot of luck finding them.

Keep in mind, when hauling Combusitibles, the containers must contain more than 119 gallons. If less then 119 gallons NO placards are needed even if you have a full trailer of it.

Flammable Liquid
173.120(a)
A flammable liquid (Class 3) means a liquid having a flash point of not more than 60.5°C (141°F), or any material in a liquid phase with a flash point at or above 37.8°C (100°F) that is intentionally heated and offered for transportation or transported at or above its flash point in a bulk packaging, with the following exceptions:
- Any liquid meeting one of the definitions specified in 49CFR 173.115.
- Any mixture having one or more components with a flash point of 60.5°C (141°F) or higher, that make up at least 99 percent of the total volume of the mixture, if the mixture is not offered for transportation or transported at or above its flash point.
- Any liquid with a flash point greater than 35°C (95°F) which does not sustain combustion according to ASTM 4206 or the procedure in Appendix H of this part.
- Any liquid with a flash point greater than 35°C (95°F) and with a fire point greater than 100°C (212°F) according to ISO 2592.
- Any liquid with a flash point greater than 35°C (95°F) which is in a water-miscible solution with a water content of more than 90 percent by mass.
Combustible Liquids
173.120(b)(1)
- For the purpose of this subchapter, a combustible liquid means any liquid that does not meet the definition of any other hazard class specified in this subchapter and has a flash point above 60.5°C (141°F) and below 93°C (200°F).
- A flammable liquid with a flash point at or above 38°C (100°F) that does not meet the definition of any other hazard class may be reclassed as a combustible liquid. This provision does not apply to transportation by vessel or aircraft, except where other means of transportation is impracticable. An elevated temperature material that meets the definition of a Class 3 material because it is intentionally heated and offered for transportation or transported at or above its flash point may not be reclassed as a combustible liquid.
- A combustible liquid which does not sustain combustion is not subject to the requirements of this subchapter as a combustible liquid. Either the test method specified in ASTM 4206 or the procedure in Appendix H of this part may be used to determine if a material sustains combustion when heated under test conditions and exposed to an external source of flame.

No compadre you cannot. Combustible is white on the bottom and flam is all red. Deputy Dawg will smoke ur arse if he catches you like this......
and speaking of flip placards.....ZERO IS A NUMBER DRIVERS. You cannot run a white placard with 4 zeros or one zero etc. A smart bear will ticket you. Same with your colors, red must be red ( not pink ) and your yellow must be that, yellow and so on...... a smart bear will ticket you.
Been there, been fined, your turn....... -

You need to check CFR 49 parts 100 to 177 to find out what's required. This is the only reference you should use. Combustible liquid N.O.S. requires ID number UN1993 packing group 3. Check 172.101. Hazardous Material Table.

We just have clear plastic windows we put in the placard holders over the sticker ones the shipper provides. No need to stick um to trailer, just slide right in the plackard holder with plastic over it. Keeps um dry and from flapping out. I haul a lot of different types of Hazmat so having placards for all of um would be crazy.
