I stopped yesterday at Eisenhower. Learned a little from DOT.
If you goof up. Miss Loveland Pass turn off. There is a loop at both ends. You get to take the loop and go back.
There isn’t much time that you might have to take Loveland and chain up. It only takes 2 to 3 inches of snow up there for them to shut it down. Then they open only when it’s good enough for no chains.
When Loveland closed. Wait on the turn out before the tunnel. They close it off and guide Hazmat through at the top of the hour. From 11pm to about 5am. Because traffic is low. They’ll guide Hazmat every 1/2 hour.

I took Loveland at sunup the other morning. It was absolutely beautiful.

BTW: They always have job openings up there. They have two guys working Loveland from the Loveland work station. One of them just quit. Doh!

Loveland is the world's highest pass that doesn't close seasonally.

10 feet short of 12,000 feet.
It’s surely the highest paved road in this country.

I was just thinking. I know the Sierras well. I’ve even driven to lake Edison.
My Whitney is only 65 feet higher than the tallest peak in the Rockies. Sierras are only a small blip compared to Rockies. I think the highest non paved road in the Sierras is only 10k? Rockies have vast amounts of land way high. Many high peaks over 14k in Colorado.

I’ve done many deliveries to Gypsum Co. Then back east. We used to plan it to hit Eisenhower at noon. That way you never had to chain up. Unless you’re in a storm.
Well... I was going to hit Eisenhower at noon yesterday. Day before showed much wet and an icy spot short of turn off to Leadville. I was up early. Decided to check Co. app. Showed i70 good all the way at 5 am. So I went ahead and took off from Grand Island. Got back to Denver early.

Mt. Whitney over looks Death Valley. I think that's got to be the biggest change in elevation in the continent.

Nope not even close. That honor belongs to the mount evans senic byway at 14130. Though the argument could be made that loveland is the highest useable by semis.

I still want to drive that one day...I've done trail ridge rd in RMNP, and that's pretty neat. A park ranger told me that they still had 20ft of snow on the road for the 4th of July.
