I've always had my trucks leased to someone and been planning to buy my friend's authority when he retires, but he keeps putting it off. Next move is to get my own authority. I know that some brokers have restrictions on giving freight to carriers with new MC numbers. Landstar has a 2 year restriction and I'm sure other brokers have similar restrictions. I do specialized/RGN work. Please share your experience with restrictions that brokers have on using carriers with new MC numbers.
Hauling restrictions with new MC number?

I only had 2 brokers turn me down my my first year in business. Freightquote.com and some other knucklehead. Never had a problem with Landstar. They seem to only care if your CSA score is good.
-
A LOT of brokers want 1,2,3,4,6,9,12+ months.. I was aggravated as hell my first 45 days, luckily, I was still able to book under my friends MC until the kinks got worked out.
-
Landstar doesn't require 2 years. I know Bill hauled LS loads with less than a year on his MC. The first one I hauled was also before his MC had a year. Maybe they require a few months. I think in a pinch they might use a new MC if a person presented themselves well.
Edited, never mind - likely heavy haul requirements are more stringent than general freight. -
False, my 2nd load after my shiny new mc# went active was for LS and it was maybe a week old. In 7 months I have only had 1 or 2 brokers turn me down and their loads weren't worth hauling anyway.
-
TQL 30 days .... CRST Logistics 6 months .... Thats all I ran into. Heavy Haul will probably be different because of the value of your freight

Only one i had that turned me down in the first year was JB

They are few and far between and in my opinion it's not like the really "good" brokers restrict the loads by MC age. It does take time with some people to work your way into their better loads.
-
Funniest thing is you will get called non-stop by JBH to pull there trailer under you MC but want to broker a load from them pulling your trailer and they want a year.
More specialized or complicated the more "experience" the better brokers will want. LS corporate will take you right out of the gate but an agent may look for some history with LS before they use you (heck, this is one of the biggest complaints from new BCOs). -
My authority went active in August this year. In the reefer world I have had only one out of about 20 that said 30 days minimum. That was TQL. Turns out I haven't needed to call them anyway. I would try CHR before TQL. Haven't needed CHR either. I know nothing about the RGN/specialized world.
