Thanks

I've driven a 362,378, and a 379, not a 386. Can't be much different.

I hate to bring up an old post, but to answer your question...yes
In a nut shellm they are a cross between a 379 and a 387. They have a 379 style cab and a 387 looking hood. Peterbilt built the truck for the owner op who wanted the fuel milage of a more areodynamic truck with the "feel" of the 379.
I've only drivn one bobtail, but they seem to turn tighter than a 379, but ride just as smooth. The hood "fits" the truck better than the early 387's, so there is no hood rattle like the 387's.
Hope this helps...Magnum1 Thanks this. -
And they are a hell of a lot better looking than those 387's. They look like big football helmets with wheels.

No but will say if you are an o/o who wants to ride in style, that is your truck. I do know one driver for a local company who switched from a 379 over to this and said the ride is much better yet still has that peterbilt feel. What are you looking at or is your company issuing you one?

I drove one bobtail cross country, it was a heavy hauler. At the end of the trip it felt like my kindeys were in my throat. Noise is minimal. It turns tight enough for what it is. Not as tight as a volvo but a lot tighter than a 379. Controls are laid out nicely. Steers very easy. Now I drove a Kenworth T-660 for about 2,000 miles. It drove very nice with a trailer behind. Very low cab noise. Easy to turn and visibility was great. IT wsa a very comfortable truck. Rode like a Lincoln town car. I like those two trucks a lot now if that tells you anything.
Magnum1 Thanks this. -
I like my 387. I am about comfort more than looks. The 387 has tons of room and since it is my home away from home I wanted to be able to spread out.....

The t660 was an old show truck from PACCAR. The only special things about the 386 was, lower gearing, axle and diff. locks, and heavier springs. The frame was the same. The engine, trans, and cooling package were all what you would normally see on a day cab truck, nothing real special. The cab noise was minimal in both trucks. But if you want a report on how a 386 speced out as an O/O would be give me about a month and I will tell you how it handles with a full load on it as we have a new one of those too.
Magnum1 Thanks this. -
thanks for all the info in the 386 guys. Now the big question, what is being said about the MPG with a full load on the trailer. With fuel prices this is probably the most important info to have. And also what has been the MPG on the 387. Thanks again for all your inputs.
