Looking for any thoughts on driving for harvest. I'm a new driver and I see a lot of companies hire new drivers for harvest for June-Nov. Anyone done this? If so, whats the upside/downside? Are HOS rules not required for ag. drivers? Are they only applicable when driving from one site to another? What are accommodations like in your experience? I see posts for $4500 a month salary plus end of harvest bonus. Is this realistic for a newbie? What about Sept-Dec harvest driving?
Thanks in advance.

Ive done it, logs were a must where I was..
Personally I think it would be a good experience for you -
The folks who I know that have done it were well pleased with the outcome. Hard, rewarding work, MOSTLY good companies to work for, fair wages, see how agriculture works in our Great Country.
Long hours in spartan surroundings is a down-side.
Try it, if you can handle the lifestyle. -
Theres some days that are hurry up and wait.. hurry up and some at a steady pace.. but its like that anywhere.. theres also fertilzers for certain crops brought in by truck.. its all seasonal unless they do a variety of freight

There's no steady harvest Sept-Dec. Unless their bring in some corn in Sept. Or late double crop beans. They harvest is to haul wheat. I have a good friend who did it one time at age 18 and now he lives out there and works steady year round for the farmer and goes on harvest every year.

I did it in 2000 I was 18. It's a life style I'm used to so I enjoyed it. Most operations like to hire young guys. If I remember correctly I was paid 1400$ a month but I would not have needed to spend a dime all summer if I didn't want to. All meals provided and we had a nice bunk house

I went on harvest in 2010 at the age of 38. It is how I started my truck driving career.
I have been involved in ag most of my life and always regretted not going on the harvest run when I was younger. I was gone 5 1/2 months and had one of the best times of my life. I can't remember what I made but as others have said I wouldn't have had to spend hardly any money if I had not wanted to. -
Where I was, the hazmat, doubles and tanker endorsement were required. Did grain, fruit, fertilizers and "other" freight. The bunk house was turned into a Hunting Resort so to speak to house the good paying hunters that came in every year. My work was steady year round. Took my rig home every day to every three days depending on the work. The ranch served other growers in the area besides them self. did doubles, flat and 53's

Thanks for the thoughts on this. Think I may be too late for this year though.
