Is there an industry standard for hand signals for backing trucks? Like point right means turn right, palm towards me means come to me, etc? We see so much terrible spotting at truck stops and shippers, I would like to at least tell a driver how to either jack it or get under it without too much difficulty.
Thanks!

HAHAHAHAHA...
Sorry. Now that I regained my composure there is only two words you need to really listen for.
WHOA DAMIT!!!! (Or some variety)
Little hands mean take it easy you are really close. Big waving semaphores mean you are fixing to wipe something out getting too close.
And the best most favorite behavior? A row of drivers on a bench outside intently watching you somewhere on you rig motionless. That is your last clue to stop there and GTFO and look.Wargames Thanks this. -
I use the Military system. Never any confusion. Not sure I can explain it. I was going to post instructions, but its more than anyone wants to read. Google it. It flat ### works and wish it was taught to more drivers. When I help you into a spot, there is no confusion.

Hand signals , we don't need No Stinkin hand signals .
At the dairies there is the Universal -verbal. YO.
This means either your backed in far enough, or your crooked in the bay and you need to pull out and reline up. Or you just backed over a hose or fellow driver, dairy worker, small dog or during Cristmas possibly an Elf.otterinthewater and tscottme Thank this. -
I hate that. Man tell me left or right and make sure I understand. If my mother was still alive, I guarantee you this...there would be no confusion.
tscottme Thanks this. -
And if you need to write a book to explain it, there is even more confusion.
I have always hated people trying to direct me. They always use hand gestures that can be interpreted many ways.
That military way may be great, but how long did it take to learn all the subtle gestures?
Trucking school is only a few weeks, and I'll bet it took nearly that long just for that.

I don’t know of an official one, but I use one that I vary according to where I am standing in relations to the driver.
1. Left side rear- stand mid trailer
I face the driver, use the left hand in circular motion signifying the way the driver should turn the steering wheel. Right hand signals forward or back. Pretty simple for most to catch on to.
2. Left side front- for when there’s an obstacle in front
Same setup with the hand plus watch for any issues with forward clearance.
3. Blind side back- stand at right front
Hold hands up and outstretched. Driver will figure out that you are signifying how much space he has on his blind side. Usually, for the driver attempting the blind side back, this is all you have to do.wore out, Broke Down 69 and brian991219 Thank this. -
I've seen some real circus shows with someone trying to tell the guy holding the wheel which way to turn it.roshea, shatteredsquare and tscottme Thank this.
