When you are being paid good, you have focus, and take the job seriously. The first step is to get proper sleep. You know what the next day is lined up to be, so you know you have to be well rested. To have a day when "you didn't sleep good", needs to be a rare occasion. If not, you are doing something wrong, or maybe you have a medical condition that needs to be addressed. As a tanker driver, you have to hold yourself to a much higher standard, since the job has higher demands.
There is never an excuse for driving tired. If you make a huge mistake while driving a dry van, the cleanup involves picking up a bunch of freight off the ground. If you make the same mistake driving a tanker, there will be a vast group of government agencies swarming the scene of the crash. The cost of the cleanup will have more zeros at the end than you can imagine. Better to drive slower, and not be involved in all that chaos.
If you don't feel you can give 100% of you attention to your driving, 100% of the time, then do something other than tanker. The risk of something going wrong is not worth it, if you are not cut out for it.

A lot of times you might come back to your terminal in 3 or 4 days, but they can't promise that will always be the case. If they know how you like to run, they will honestly do everything they can to fit your running style with the loads they give you. I can't speak for other terminals, but when the Bensalem, PA terminal manager tells you he will get you home early on Friday, you will be in the yard most times by Thursday afternoon.
If you have 7+ years driving, you will have no problem making good money at Groendyke. You might have to adjust your driving habits a little, to fit into the company's safety requirements, but it is an adjustment which is well worth making. Driving safer that you probably do now, is actually relaxing, after you make the adjustment. Their dispatching always allows plenty of time for you to get there, so the stress of meeting the delivery window is almost non existent.
Good pay, good equipment, and respect from your Boss, as well as the customers you deal with. What more could you ask for?
And just so you know, I do not participate in any of their referral programs, so I do not benefit in any way by getting people to consider working for them. I am simply trying to help fellow drivers find respectable work.jlkklj777 Thanks this. -
Thank you for the encouragement to apply with groendyke. Finished the app last night and I hope they have something out of Chicago that will fit my schedule. Do they have any dedicated runs to Canada. I have my passport card and I heard most carriers pay everytime you do a border crossing in addition to regular pay.

Groendyke is in Denver and in Grand Junction, CO

Anyone know what the starting hourly pay is for a Class 0 driver? Is it terminal specific?

Recent grad with CDL-A tanker and Hazmat or a driver with less than 6 months.

OK, now I just learned something. I don't know if they even take recent Grads, but if they do, it would be a tough place to gain experience. They expect you to be in top form after a couple weeks of training.
BDJ Thanks this.
