HI All
Gotta a newbie question for everyone. I was a limousine driver for about 15 years but the limo business now is the pits. The limo company I worked for had motorcoaches so when Greyhound bus called and offered a job I jumped. The hourly union wage for GY drivers in my town is 19.20 per hour. Theres lots of overtime. However, they have me on the extra board which basically entails being on call 24 hours a day. I used to love to drive before working for these folks. There is no time for lunch breaks, No coffee break and basically driving at night. The worse thing is they forbid radios of any sort. They have turned driving into slavery. The nice thing about the job is that they put me up in a hotel every night. But, eating is expensive. There are 20 minute stops on some routes but im too busy taking tickets, storing luggage and of course filling out the log book.
How does this deal sound to you OTR guys? As a new OTR driver would you be able to set your own schedule? Eat a 30 minute lunch when u wanted? Have a 15 minute coffee break? Listen to your favorite radio channel?
What about accommodations? Do they set u up in hotels at all or are u basically stuck in the truck till u come home?
Thanks in Advance
Greyhound Bus Driving or OTR?

And that's why I drove entertainer buses and not seat coaches.
Prof.Gringo Thanks this. -
Stuck in a truck but your freight doesn't talk back to you which equates to a load of crushed beer cans instead of a load of I-phones if that makes sense!
Jarhed1964, SHO-TYME, Shaggy and 1 other person Thank this. -
You can take as many brks as you want, just don't be late delivering that load and don't be a truckstop hero by using all your available hrs sitting at a ts unless you're waiting for a load.Companies will not set you up in a motel unless your trk is broke down.I can understand the Greyhounds policy having no radios, you have a bus load of ppl to think about not jammin to tunes.

You are in a sleeper, with a bed. You won't need a hotel.
You can't make your own hours, except as they fit in with the current load. But you do have some leeway.
We are now required to take a 30 minute break within an 8 hour on-duty status, so you'll get your lunch time.
And our rest breaks are ours to decide, keeping in mind the delivery time of the load.
And in the truck you can listen to whatever you want, at whatever volume.
Radio, CD, XM or whatever format. -
Every OTR Company is different.
General speaking:
Stop all you want, but youre paid by the mile and often loads are late before you even pick them up
If you want a hotel, pay for it yourself. OTR Run sleeper cabs for a reason
Ive never heard of a company dictating what you can and cant listen to. Lots of drivers have XM or Ipod interfaces. -
Stay where you are. If you think that job is slavery wait till you drive a truck. They are putting camera in lots of trucks and some companies are even banning cell phone usage with the head set. You also do a lot of night driving and finding a place to park sucks. At least you got some cuties to check out. All you see here is big guys with baby gap shirts, and pants that show 3 to 4 inches of their crack.
Jarhed1964, Prof.Gringo, Mike2633 and 4 others Thank this. -
^ greyhound clientele isn't any better...

You forgot the 90 yr ol TS waitress who dumps coffee on you and throws your over-well raw eggs down and never comes back except for a tip. Or all the people who piss in a bottle or bag and throw it out. Still, I'd never drive a Hound, they stink. Get to pass too many of them, not like the 70s when You saw their tailights.
