    Hallo everyone.
I am 35 years old and I am interested in immigrating for some time (3-5years) as there are no jobs in Greece. I am interested in truck driving as I was a driver when I was in the Greek Navy for 2 years. I have in mind that some companies offer CDL training for free through their own driving school, and when you are ready they give you to sign an agreement to work for them for about 1 or 2 years. I was wondering If I could attend a cdl course like that without a US driving Licence (I have a european one) and If a green card is needed for this, so that I could work there as soon as I finish the training.
    Thank you.

yes, green card is needed. You need to have a work permit to put it in simple terms. There are temporary visas to work in the US, which are employer sponsored, but I have no clue about them, so don't ask me.

You can participate in the green card lottery, and hope to get one.

Work in a field that is really needed, like nursing I guess.

Last, have plenty of money to open or buy a business here.

I assume your English is adequate enough, here is the link to the immigration website of the United States:

    good luck

If there is one thing truly grating on my nerves here, it's the flippant way some people answer any question. I realize this is an open forum in which you may express yourself as you wish, but dang, when people ask questions, why always the sarcasm and bad jokes?

Sabine- I think you are going to have get used to it or ignore it.if it wasn't me it was going to be someone else. Any way it gets me that this guy can come on here and ask us if he needs a green card. Really? Of course he needs a green card but he would know that if he did his own research.

Thank you both for your answers.
It is my fault I did not get clear before.
My question is about the companies that offer free training under the condition that you have to work for them for some time.
If they accept me in of those companies..
In case they offer me a job as soon as I get my training will it be easy to get the green card?
Thank you again for your time.

    Sadly, it is immaturity.

Many just like to post whether they have anything meaningful to put in or not.

you will not be able to do training and then hope to get a green card. You have to follow due process before you come here. Which will include being in the possession of the green card or work permit before you arrive.

US immigration laws are pretty clear on that. If you arrive on a tourist Visa you may not work. This is not to say you can't come to school here, but no trucking company will spend money on training you if you are not legally able to live and work here. There are special Visas for going to school, but even if you have that, it is no guarantee for a green card.

And last, which may hinder you, even if you get here via lottery for example, is the fact that you may have to have an American drivers license for cars for a year before a lot of companies would employ you. European experience does not count.

If I wanted to move to another country, I wouldn't know where to start. Ask someone that lives there or do a bunch of googling?

We get a bunch of these questions so many have done the research already. greek done good coming here.

Yes greek if they offer you a job half the battle is done. Go to that website in post #2

I'm sure any trucking company that was willing to give you free training would want you to have your green card prior to going through the training. Otherwise, it would be a total waste of money on their part if you were not able to get a green card after the fact. Sadly, with all the American citizens currently unemployed and searching for work and training, you probably stand a better chance of getting a job than they do, Just Sayin'.
