When you grease the tie rod ends, should the tie rod Purge grease, or do you just add grease until the boot is full?

i used to pump in the grease, till some of the old was coming out. (i did this on my cars and pick up trucks)

also, be mindful of the zerk fitting check ball, that the grease does NOT come out from that, if it does REPLACE that zerk fitting.

I've always been taught that grease purges past, through, around a rubber seal then you greased too much and the seal is now ruined... metal on metal is a different story.

Tie rod ends I have always just give them a few pumps of grease every few weeks... unless they are just starting to go bad, then I will grease them almost daily to limp it along just long enough to get it to someplace I can get them replaced.

I just pump them up until I see the rubber boot start to bulge. We greased everything every weekend though.

If grease comes out, it is time to replace, some you can just replace the rubber boot, but some you can't.

You can see the rubber bulge a little before blowing the seal, that is all the grease it needs.

I thought they were a dust cover type, Made to purge out the old, I always get some grease out of them, though my dust boots are so old, their split open.

split open seals are no good. the grease inside could/will wash out in a severe rainy drive.

i am not certain that just the boots can be bought, but rather the entire tie rod. check that out.

Think it all depends on what style of boot the ball and socket uses. All purge differently. I tend to over grease, but wipe it up before and after. I like to flush the dirt, debris, and water out. That is what creates play, not fresh grease. On the other hand, tore boot will accelerate wear.

I will have to call stemco and see if they have technical assistance for that.

I bought a stemco quick tie tie rod assembly. I was very happy with that.

You can see how much heavier the tube is than the original.
