Hello everyone. I found that my front huns have been packed with grease instead of hub oil. Can i run this without killing myself or someone else. Im not a rookie just lookin for veteran advice. Read lots of diff forums found that greased last longer if regularly repacked ect ect... thanks.

If you can determine the manufacturer of the hub(bearings), ask them.

I think the oil bath method of lubrication is mainly to save labor. I think the grease packed hubs would require periodic re-packing.

I had a trailer with grease hubs.
I found the difference is in the wheel seals. Bearings are the same for oil hubs.
I think the reason for grease versus oil is if unit sits a while. The bearings don't rust.

My last truck had them. Bought the truck with about 450,000 miles on it and sold it with 735,000 miles on it. I don't know if anything had been done with them before I bought it but never any issues. FWIW I was told they are supposedly good for 500,000 miles or more.

    Grease?

OK get the manufacture of the axle, model and serial number, then ask them.

I do not allow it to be used in the hubs, there is a reason why oil is used.

Well ive researched it for quite a while and through my 20 years tech exp and all the research ive found that ep bearing grease put last oil. Dont leak out as easy and has been used for about 100 years on bearings so i guess im good

The hubs on my dry van came from the factory packed with synthetic grease. They can easily be converted to oil bath but I don't see the need. It sits parked for long periods anyway so grease is probably best.

Hm. They need oil inside of them. If it is the kind that you have to pop that little rubber bushing in the center, stick a finger in there and have oil liquid to the first finger joint, then it's in good shape. Anything else invites a fire once it overheats and tries to weld into a single item. Possibly shearing off the whole wheel that will hurt someone really bad.

I don't know of any grease capable of keeping up with hub bearings in that sort of work. They used to make a red type grease that was particularly GOOOD. but such a bomb literally. I think EPA forced the USA to stop making that special red grease which I will try to find for that type of work. I don't recall the name and brand of it anymore but it's such a distinctive and only one... of it's kind.
