Hey guys I had a question that I've been meaning to ask and get a actual answer to it.
I do a lot of runs thru Laredo TX and it's the only place I noticed this issue.
A lit of times here when we grab a trailer that cane across Mexico it ends up missing it's rubber seals/gaskets that go on the trailer gladhand couplers.
The company shop keeps boxes of them on hand because it's a common problem.
I heard one person say they steal em and then smoke em. I find it less plaussable then what I think it's taken for Wich is making there own tattoo ink. But is rubber that hard to come by?
Have you guys running thru around this area or others noticed and know why they take them?

Not sure why they are missing, but in Laredo it does seem to be a problem.
Nearly every time I pick up a trailer at the Swift terminal, the seals are missing. So I have to walk in to the shop to get more, and they only want to give me two.

And that seems to be the only place it happens.

    That's odd.
Used to the big problem was reefer units and tires being swapped out before returning the trailers to the border.

they still do that. at my last company we had brand new trailers come back across with rusted wheels and junk tires. all the oldler trailers had orange paint marks on the tires and wheels. the gladhand seals is just something else for them to steal.

This has been happening for years.
When I asked the shop about it I was told some garbage excuse about the driver wanting to keep the seals for some reason.

It is probably the shop collecting them, just to make things difficult for the drivers.

This is a problem and has been for a long time. As a driver you need to keep 8 or 10 of these gaskets for times like these and others when you get a trailer with a busted one and it won't hold air. Just make sure you get the low profile gaskets. There are 2 kinds. I got stuck there once and all I could get my hands on was the thick ones. If you ask around in one of your shops most mechanics will give you a handful.

Gladhand seals can not be stolen before they arrive at the terminal on the U.S. side.

Yes, that is right. However once the driver drops the trailer they pull the gaskets off. I have seen this so many times. I remember getting a quick peek into a tractor and could see a small bucket. The driver looked like he had put something that was in his hand in that bucket.

When I worked for PAM I took the seals off the trailer I dropped in Laredo so I had them for the trailer I picked up.
