    Hey all,

How do you handle the issue of "Sleep?"

I GOOGLED this problem and came up with 100's of pages regarding this issue. Studies have shown those who don't get a full amount of rest (sleep) on a consistent basis, suffer long term affects of bad health. Not to mention the recent CRASH of the Walmart driver who was not sleeping for 24hrs. Now the poor ##### is being charged as a Criminal causing an accident.

There is no doubt that a LACK OF SLEEP causes chronic fatigue among Truck Drivers. Apparently they give you 10 hrs of relax time (but that can be cut into quite easily from issues not related to you). IF you are nodding off while driving a rig, this would not be good.

    • Are you able to keep a regular sleep schedule?
    • If you have too, are you able to sleep during the day time?
    • How many hours on avg. do you sleep a day?
    • ALSO, how do you manage to CHANGE your sleep rhythm if you are accustom to going to bed at 11pm and then getting up at 6am?

    Just asking...
    ~Thanks everyone

    From a vampire trucker's perspective:

-Yes, if you keep yourself on a regular schedule, it's no problem, however, we work in an industry without regular schedules.

-I haven't had a problem sleeping in the daylight, as long as you have a good set of curtains, and I use noise canceling headphones.

    - Probably 7-8 hours, occasionally, if I feel drowsy, I will grab a quick nap mid- run if time allows.

    - I just had to do this last night since I had been stuck running days for a couple weeks. Yesterday, I got home about 1600, then forced myself to stay up all night. I didn't let myself zone in front of the TV; I actually did stuff like vacuuming out my cab, sleeper and wife's car, catching up on paperwork etc. Then at about 0600, I went to bed and made myself get up about 1400 or so. Tonight, I will do the same thing, then I will be fine to hit the road about 2000 Sunday night. I find it much harder to switch back from nights to days, though, but I've been primarily vampire for probably 10-15 years.

Some drivers don't sleep well here and there then they drive tired mainly because they're under a load..Trucking you are not on a regular sleep schedule unless your dispatcher tries and gives you loads that he or she knows when you're the most productive.I always liked starting no later then 3 or 4 am every morning so my dispatchers would find me loads that fit my schedule. If you plan on hauling reefer then plan on weird hrs.Alot of loads are delivered sometime during graveyard hrs,If you feel you're too tired to drive then find a safehaven and take a nap.No reasons why drivers can't.But if you're some truck stop hero you're going to have trouble sleeping and getting the load delivered on time. Many drivers take too many brakes with loads and then they wonder why they're dispatcher gets mad if they don't make ontime delivery.Theres been times I took a cat nap but I had time to make the load as well.

Everyone is different. I can't get any sort of meaningful rest anywhere from 06:00 to about 17:00 unless I'm dog tired from far too few hours rest over the last 48 hours or so of running nights ... and then it's only maybe 5 hours, and I wake still tired, yet can't sleep any more.

There are no easy answers and it's a problem. Some like to run nights and they are welcome to continue to do so. Biggest problem is having to run a load where you end up shutting down at 02:00 out of hours. Good luck finding parking at that hour.

For me, there is a very particular amount of sleep I need to be well-rested the remaining portion of the day. Too much sleep is bad for me, as well as too little sleep is a problem. I need about 8 hours. No more, no less.

Hmmmm.....sounds like getting a "consistent" sleep routine for drivers is TOUGH.

Probably why so many have health issues. Job sounds like it would VERY Difficult keep and remain healthy. Something to consider, if anyone wants to be a Trucker.

too much sleep isn't a problem for me. it's the only time i get ambition to do anything.

i sleep better at home then i do on the road. i can follow the rules at home. but on the road. forget about it. ain't going to happen.

I get about 5 to 6 hrs of sleep during my 10 . Its partially due to the fact that I just wake and can't go back to sleep.
I have been that way for yrs , long before I started driving truck.

Now as for the sleep schedule sometimes I sleep during the day and sometimes at night , but if your tired you will have no problem falling asleep no matter what time it is..
