What type of rules do they have there? Any crazy things to know about?

The rules aren't anything crazy, just the usual stuff. I didn't mean to scare you. It's just the same things you'll find at any company their size. When I was there the big item was being sure to take your half hour lunch breaks.

They run a satelite-based tracking system in all the trucks (WebTech) . The only bad thing about it is that anybody in the trucking division office can watch every move your truck is making. It's usually the truck bosses. They're all former drivers and they understand how things work and they're pretty understanding because they've been there. But if some bean counter clerk in the main office looks at your truck and sees that it's taking you...for instance...45 minutes to drive through Marysville they usually don't understand why. It's easy to deal with and they'll usually call your truck boss if they have any questions.

You have to run legal. They are fussy about that and the WebTech also keeps your logs for you. If you bust your HOS it will show up quick.

They didn't have cameras in the cabs when I left. Don't know about now.

The chip trucks run 24 hours a day so you'd have to share a truck with somebody. The lumber trucks run solo.

I don't know how the dispatching works for lumber or chips. I used to hear some of the lumber haulers complaining about dispatch but that might have just been a few whiny-babies. Most of the guys never said much at all. The lumber trucks seemed to be in the yard most every week-end.

I hope I'm answering your questions. Like I said before I hauled logs and I can't really claim to be an expert on all the details of the lumber and chip operation but I'll tell you what I know.

I appreciate it a lot. I don't mind the e-log but I would get frustrated if Every night I had a boss calling me and wondering why something took longer than it should of or something like that. If I get the loads done on time then I would hope they wouldn't get to controlling.Idk if I could handle a camera in the truck or not but would be willing to deal with it I guess if it meant being home everyday. The chip vans that run out of Red Bluff, how far do they go on a normal shift do you know? My dad used to haul chips for Kenny Knowles back in the early 90's and he would do 2 trips a night from Weaverville to Samoa.

I start with Goselin tomorrow, have to run local for two weeks for training. So now all I have to do is find a place to live the next month in a half.:biggrin_25519:

With the colleges going in to summer, housing might not be that bad up there. At one time I was going to live on a sailboat in the harbor at Eureka.

I'd dig living on a boat.... I don't think the wife would, she gets sea sick on a big ol' cruise ship :biggrin_25512:

so far so good with Goselin, some of these guys are a riot, and half of em seem to of known each other their whole lives. Had a customer call in and gave em a compliment about me. The only problem I'm having is waking up earlier than I'm used to, and getting that strap in that itty bitty space between the load and the roof. but open and closing a curtain beats tarping any ol' time.

So I do believe they are going to kick me loose, early next week.

Welcome to the Humboldt Nation LOL!! Don't breathe too deep, you might get a random....

I remember Louis from the 1970's. His trucks were always immaculate & he was always dressed sharp. He started with a 2 axle Peterbilt cabover, hauling Knudsen dairy products to Eureka. I remember sitting in the truck stop in Ukiah one time with him and a guy named Danny Wooley. We were all ######## about our respective fathers. It's nice to see someone succeed by doing things right.

Wait til you get a dry load out of Scotia, it will make you an expert at throwing straps into tight spaces. My only other advice is to get a Costco card so you can go get something to eat while you wait in line at Schmidbauer. We used to call them "all day lumber" cause that's how long it took to get loaded.

Eureka has great restaurants. Try Rita's for Mexican, Bless My Soul on the northbound 101 (5th St.?) for Creole/Southern and the natural food market on the corner of Broadway as you leave Schmidbauer has a great deli.

I'm almost jealous you get to live there & I'm stuck in Pukiah.

I got a load outta scotia on Friday, I got lucky though it wasn't too high.

I ate at the Rita's in Arcata, last time I was here, the wife got hammered off their margarita's even though she complained about their top shelf tequila the whole time.:biggrin_25515:

And as a matter of fact I just got a Costco card yesterday. Came with a free Pizza.
