I got a new Big Tex gooseneck flat bed. I needed the "monster ramps" and I give them 2 thumbs up. The rest of the the trailer not so much. But I regress.
On my old trailer I was able to mount the winch about an inch above the deck and I really had no problems with it. However, on this new trailer due to the way it is built, the best location to mount the winch is about 3 feet above the deck. Has anyone mounted the winch that high on their trailer? Any problems? I am loading inop cars, trucks, and tractors with the winch.

We've mounted the both ways, up high, down low. Anytime we needed the cable low to the deck we just ran a chain across the trailer from side to side, and ran the winch line under the chain to hold it down. That works. You can also weld a D ring down low at the front of the trailer and use a Clevis/shackle,or snatch block to run the cable low.
Slay Thanks this. -
My thinking was the same as yours i.e. the chain and a snatch block to get it lower. I was wondering if anyone had run into other problems with the winch up higher.
I purchased a Reese hitch for under a step bumper and turned it upside down and had it welded toward the top of the gooseneck. With the winch mount that goes into the 2 inch receiver I can now have a winch or not as needed.
The welder liked it up high, in order to avoid the cable dragging on the break over point of the trailer.
Just food for thought. -
I also used a receiver hitch on my 40' Lowboy . My thought was, this way I could easily transfer it to my 20' bumper pull if I needed to. Great minds think alike. LolLast edited: Feb 14, 2017
