July of 2018 I had a blow out on my first load after re activating my Authority. The tires came with the truck and I did not know their condition, though I knew they were retreads. So I limped the truck to the nearest Goodyear Commercial Tire dealer which was in Belleville, MI. The tires I needed were 285-75R-24.5. They did not have any new tires so I got a set of Goodyear Retreads. That was all they had in that size and I was under a heavy load. About 1 month later one of the new retreads blew out while on the road, taking out my mud flap hangar in the process. I called the Goodyear road service out in Lansing MI. after a new retread for $200 and a service call of $350 I was back on the road.
When I called the Bellville Goodyear Shop about the blown tire, the counter guy started giving me a bunch of bull about "Oh it may not be the tires fault, It may have not been inflated properly." I was very surprised to hear talk like that from a Goodyear Rep. when the tires were so new. They did not even have 10,000 mile on them.
About a week later I noticed that another tire had a huge bubble sticking out of the sidewall. I took the truck to the Lansing Goodyear Commercial Tire Dealer, and he credited my account for the blown tire and replaced the tire that had the bubble. I was still out the $350 for the road service.
I parked the truck for the winter and started running again July of 2019. In July 2019 another one of the tire treads separated just out of Atlanta, I limped it to the TA and paid for another tire myself, about $450 , since It was Sunday and I couldn't find a goodyear tire shop around. Just last week I found that yet another tire had a 3" X 24" piece of tread missing. The tires had about 38,000 miles on them at this point. I took it to the Lansing MI Goodyear shop and he warrantied the tire and replaced if free of charge.
I have to say that the Goodyear shop in Lansing, MI treated my very well and took care of me, but I feel that Goodyear should have paid for the cost of the road service.
Needless to say, I will never buy another Goodyear Retread. I will definitely never go back to the Belleville, MI Goodyear to buy anything at all. And I will probably never do business with Goodyear again.
I paid more for that set of retreads than I can get a whole set of virgin import tires for.
I have heard of retreads being May Pops, but these are definitely Will and Do Pops
Goodyear Retreads NO GOOD

By the way that is 4 out of 8 tires that have self destructed. I have never let these tires get below 95 psi.
Intothesunset and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
Do you know how to tell when those tires were made and how many times they have been capped?
Dino soar Thanks this. -
Not really, I know there are some numbers supposed to be branded into them that are supposed to give some info, but I do not know the details
-
Last 4 of the DOT # are the week and year tire was made. 0317 would have been made the third week of 2017. Everytime a tire is capped it is to have a simular marking for when it was capped. How old are they and how many times have they been capped? What brand are the casings and did they have section repairs? Some companies uses the unknowing for an old tire dumping ground. All caps are not bad but still not originals.

We feel burned by GY on car tires as well. Three complete sets of 4 failed to see 30K before developing sidewall defects that essentially turned them into a bomb.
We finally installed American generics of a better premium than cheap tires or less than the all out 200 dollar tires from GY. They are performing very well so far. We can expect 50K out of them.
In big rigs since I quit containers and bad tires, I never had recaps put on the rig. Ever. Its virgin or forget it.Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
Leslie Tire, Mt Clemens Mi. Has good caps, I’m told. I know of 3 Trucks, running them for at least 5 yrs without incident. I don’t run caps myself, but is tempting. $200 ea, + install. I’m told, 1 st run casings, in house capping.

Even with a virgin tire of any make, the dealer will want to look at it and make sure it has not been run under inflated, if it has 100 miles or 20,000. You can pick up a nail in the driveway leaveing the tire shop, so I would not hold that part against them.
If a guy is going to run caps on the big road, they like to be aired up tight, heat is what kills them.
I am not a goodyear fan, but they were the first with a one piece cap, and at one time would pay for any damage that one of their caps did to a trailer, fenders of side boxes when if they threw a cap.
I bet a guy would be hard pressed to get any manufacturer to pay a service call from someone they are not affilliated with and approved of before the fact, just how it is. -
Casing Condition and age plays a factor here. Along with PSi Looks like the Unit sat for maybe 6-7 months? A Nail in the tread could cause an air pocket between the cap and casing. Lots of different things cause tire failure #1 is under inflation.

I think if you're going to operate on the low budget tire program, a spare, couple irons, blocks of wood, jack, and impact gun should be standard on the truck.
RD420's are General Tires generic drives that are routinely going to the high 200's, low 300's for $320 a whack.stayinback, BoxCarKidd and x1Heavy Thank this.
