Also, the poster above had a good point about private CDL schools. Some of these 'schools' out there are pretty scary, amounting to nothing but two bit hustlers that don't care about you or your loved ones you might be trying to support. Here's some important tips to consider if you plan on going to a private CDL school. And when I mean private CDL school, I'm talking about not going to a company-sponsered CDL school. There's positives and negatives to each approach. But, here's the tips I was about to pass on:
1. Make sure the school has the required amount of hours that most companies look for, usually around 170.
2. Make sure that any companies you are already interested in will hire from the school you're about to commit to - certain companies only hire from certain schools, that doesn't mean the school is not a good school, just that certain companies don't hire from that school. check in advance
3. Do your homework and make sure you are hire-able - check minimum qualifications for the companies you're interested in. E.g., if you have a DUI under 3 years old, don't even bother. If you have multiple traffic violations in a short amount of time, could be a deal breaker.
4. After you verify that the companies you're interested in will hire from the school you're interested in, get pre-hires. you can do all this before you even commit to a school. most companies will want you to apply 30 days BEFORE your graduation date. most schools are 30 days long. having pre-hires basically tells you that you are hire-able on a basic level, so you can rest assured that you'll get a job to pay back that school bill you just funded from your own pocket. Keep in mind some companies do a more extensive screening during orientation, so a pre-hire is NOT a guarantee for employment. again, check your eligibility w/ a company's minimum requirements
5. spend the small amount of money to get your driver abstract from your state's DMV. you better know what's on your driving record so you know if you're eligible for hire
6. if funding or aid isn't available for your private schooling, and IF you're good w/ managing your money, you can apply for a new credit card with up to 18 months no interest. That's only an option if you have a good credit history, and if you are good at managing your money so you can pay of the balance before you're slapped w/ interest fees. On a $4500 balance, we only pay $66.00 per month. We have 18 months to pay that off before interest starts - no problem. better than any bank loan!
Those are just a few pointers if you decide to go to private CDL school instead of the company-sponsered route. Nothing wrong w/ either option, just like finding the right trucking job, it depends on what's best for you and your family. I chose the private route so that I had more options out of the gate. If I was younger without a family, had no money to spend or a good credit history, I would've probably gone to Prime Inc and went through their company training. Hope this helps!!!Road Boss Thanks this. -
hacc, aaa trucking school, lancaster carrer and technologie center in mount joy.try applying with sygma in industrial rd they will pay your school

Just make sure you compare the schools and what they have to offer. There's lots of choices in our area, which is a good thing. I don't want to spread misinformation, but I think AAA trucking school only takes you out on the highways.

HACC seems to have a good CDL program.
"The Class "A" Program is six weeks and costs around $5,000. The cost includes textbooks, Hazmat training, DOT physical, drug testing, preparation for permit testing and the CDL test.
Primary training includes preparation for a CDL learners permit test; explanation of CDL responsibilities, including security of cargo handling and documents, hours of service and hazardous materials; orientation to CDL basic systems; fundamentals of truck driving basics; actual driving skills, including speed and space management, night driving, railroad crossings, and hazard perceptions; advanced driving skills, including extreme driving conditions, emergency maneuvers, skid control and recovery, and special rigs(including tankers); and personal health and safety." -
Some companies have particular schools that they hire from. Try going to the company websites. For example: Shaffer has a list of approved schools where they hire from at the following web address. http://shafferjobs.com/approved-schools/
