Need some advice.. Am considering obtaining CDL for OTR and looking into Texas companies who will cover training costs. Looked at CRST and reviews came back that it is a trainwreck ... low pay, bad trainers, high attrition rate. Im a hard working single mom and doing this because i have to support my family and keep a roof over our heads. I cant afford the private schools. Can anyone please shed some light on the reputible companies who are willing to give a person an honest shake? Thanks so much for your opinions. I value drivers opionions more than slick brochures.

I went with FFE. Their school and headquarters is located in Fort Worth. The school is fast paced, and last 18 days. The instructors are very knowledgeable and take safety very seriously. I am one week into the training so far.

Catheryn cdl sponsor ship schools are all pretty messed up. if u go to c1 school in fortworth that means ur probably gonna go through driver solutions they will put u with pam transport or usa express both companies are horrible. im going to school through stevens transport at the school they use in houston it last 15 days 5 days in class the instructor is really good helps with the reviewing and study for the written test. then 10 days of driving practice plus finishing up the written test u didnt learn b4. the only thing about the school in houston is that they dont have housing u would have to pay for ur own stay. and for the company i hear good and bad but have down alot of research and it seem to me to be the best training company out there. but thats just my opinion. no company that pays for ur cdl school pays very good the 1st year but they have good training. and new equipment i know right now they give u either a late 2011 or a 2012 truck we you go solo

Another option is CDL training through a community collge such as Sage (http://www.sageschools.com/) at St Philip's Comm College (http://www.alamo.edu/spc/ptd/) in San Antonio, TX. Classes start every two weeks. Their program is very popular right now due to the demand for drivers in the Eagle Ford oil patch which is pulling current drivers from so many other positions. Just check out the job listings for the San Antonio area on this site.

Many companies will reimburse your CDL tuition up to $6K, but that varies by company, so the final cost to you could be minimal and you're not tied to any one company when you are done. I like the idea of being able to pick and choose companies once I have my Class A ticket.

Sage also has a two week refresher course for those who have been away from driving for a while, or who are upgrading from Class B to Class A CDL. There is also a week-end program for those who are holding down a job while working on their CDL.

I'll be starting there tomorrow for 5 weeks (156 hours) of training - two weeks in classroom (M-F 8-5), three weeks behind the wheel in 4 hour increments (44 hours BTW), and testing for Texas CDL.

Since it is through a community college, some outside funding (fed student loan, GI Bill, TX Hazelwood Act, TX Public Education Grant, WIA, DARS, etc.) may apply towards all or part of your tuition. Check with the school for details. I don't have any GI Bill left, so I'm using the Hazelwood Act for part of my tuition. I'm using my credit union for the balance as I don't want a federal student loan.

See you out there on the road.

The guys stay in a dorm which is on the training site. The gals, stay at the hotel and the hotel shuttle runs you to and from school. There is a shuttle bus that runs to Wal-Mart on Mondays and Thursdays. The instructors are very much involved (some more than others), but all of them have at least a million miles under their belts. You will get a Texas CDL manual and a practice test the moment you arrive at the hotel. You will need to complete the practice test before class on monday. Monday and Tuesday, you are doing class after class and practice test after practice test.

They will tell you from day one that rule number 1 is Follow Instructions. But no matter how involved the instructors are and no matter how many times they break down how to do something, it is on the student to learn it and do it. They want you to do it FFE's way or its the highway. The key here is to follow directions and do everything in a safe manner.

Also, never never never never ever fall asleep in class. That will get you dismissed from the school. The see that as the same as falling asleep behind the wheel.

you could check out FFE in Dallas they have a training program, 18 days to get ur cdl but u must stay with em for 1 year or u pay 3,000 with interest. Check out Covenant, USX or prime. Consider teaming your first year . 2 heads are better then one in the first year. I think its tough for a lady but u can do it...check the utubes u will see a gal named Desere, or something like that spelling she is cool and tells much very informative. u can learn much about trucking via utubes. i highly recommend it....i hope this helps you.

Do NOT go with Covenant, word to the wise. I've been warned by several folks that used to drive for them.

That's what I would do. Check a local college. You can probably get a grant. FFE will screw up your DAC. Then you can call Schneider. For a female trainee, call Schneider.
