Last time I picked up at the port of Houston my escort had already been arranged.

I have been to the Port of Jacksonville regularly for the past 8 years and have never been asked about the need for an escort. Maybe it has to do with getting in the lanes that say TWIC, instead of the lane that refers to needing an escort. I pull up, hand them my badges, they tell me to have a nice day and may or may not get inspected and I am on my way.

The Port of Jacksonville is one of the ports that wants you to have their own version of a TWIC badge, in addition to the TWIC badge itself. I got my initial TWIC and Jax Port badge at the same location, right there on the port, instead of having to go to the Tally Rand Avenue location for one thing and finish it at the port. Everything is now consolidated at the port.

I have spoken to a couple of the escorts while waiting to load. Both of them say they make pretty good money. That is a subjective term, as good money for some is less than pocket change for others. The OP should not have any problems getting an escort.

Also, to the OP, don't worry too much if they pull you in to the shed to inspect you. A little bit of radiation is good for the soul. A couple of questions and a quick peek in the cab and you are on your way. You won't even realize the ever-so-faint green glow until much later in the night. :)

I will be at the Jax Port later today myself. Looking forward to the free chemo :) Isn't Obamacare great? !!!

There is a parking area,.. well area that you can stop at a little before the port. Sign says something like Twic cards needed or authorized agents only,.. its been a while since I was there. There is a gas station either across the street or at the intersection. Shell with a convenience store IIRC. The few times I went there,.. I had an escort already set up, but each time waiting for my escort, I would have guys drive over from the gas station and approach me asking me if I needed an escort. Out of curiosity I asked how much he charged. He started at $90,.. then down to $60. The 2nd guy offered to do it for $30.

Yep, it must have been a while since you have been there. I-295 & Heckscher Drive. There is a gas station/fuel stop on either side of I-295 at that intersection. A Kangaroo with a Quiznos on one side and a Gate on the other. The entrance to the port is approximately 1 mile east of the Gate. You turn (veer) right and about 1/4 mile and you are on the Port of Jax. There is the parking area (shoulder of the road) just prior to the office but before the "toll booths" (no toll needed but that is where the officers are who look at your badges and raise the traffic bar allowing entrance onto the port).

The closest gas station is the Gate and it is over a mile away.

Got to go in the shed today for the secondary inspection. Now parked for the night near some very bright parking lot lights so I cannot even see the soft green glow of the radiation treatment.

That is pretty interesting about how the escorts do it. Reminds me a lot of how lumpers used to operate when I started driving in the early nineties. Approach you before you even got to the grocery warehouse and begin a bidding war for you to use their services. Heck, they may still do that at some places, but fortunately for me, everywhere I go now has in-house lumper services with pre-determined fees.

Forgive me for being noisy, but do you have a TWIC and no JaxPort badge or just no TWIC at all? The reason I ask, is since the Port of Jacksonville has the JaxPort badge, I wonder if a driver comes onto the port with just a TWIC, will he be allowed unescorted access or must he still pay for the escort simply because he doesn't have the JaxPort badge.

Additionally, the Port of Jacksonville is the only Port I have been on since the .gov implemented the TWIC program, so I wonder how many other ports have their own badge and if you need escorts without the specific port badge although you have a TWIC?

I had just bought my first truck and was hauling cars. I was picking up a couple cars there and nope,.. no twic. Its one of those I'll get around to it things that laughably,.. I've still never gotten around to it.

Ports annoy me,.. its always hurry up and wait with some guy who speaks broken english, who for some reason always tweaks my nerves. Every port I've ever been to has been like that. East coast or west.
