hey I’ve been trucking for over 2 years. Its been cool but man is it a lonely and depressing. I ended up with a great company making 72k a year running flatbed otr. Lately I’ve been contemplating going back to college for computer science to pursue a career in programming and ethical hacking. I’m 28 years old. Honestly I feel old as hell maybe it’s just the truck ripping the life out of me idk. Anyone else pursue college while running otr full time? Obviously I’d have to do it online I’m just not sure if I should.

If you can afford it then why not pursue what you want to do!
I took online classes when I was OTR, last semester of college I was running regionally for Schneider part-time.
I’m a science teacher now, but still drive over the summer.

I know several people who have. Successfully.

You can do most things online now. For the same price as actually attending brick and mortar, less local living expenses ;) Win Win

Just an FYI. It’s a LONG way to that 6 figure job. While you’re getting that degree. Get the Certs. They’re worth a lot more than the degree. Cheaper too.

    Forget it.

I went to college myself for IT, which included three months in a controlled lab for defense and attacking of computer systems and networks for three months.

You can do trucking OR you can do college. Not both.

The reason we got out of college after 5 years and 46000 dollars debt (Paid off, worthless 4 year degree and a pile of credits towards a two year IT degree) was because Arkansas back in 2003 was going to bring in Visa workers from overseas for IT work in our state data centers, one of which I was pending to be assigned to as a Intern that month. Once the Visa workers finished the visa time here in Arkansas they go back to India and use what they learned here to establish schools and teach other India Citizens the wonders of our simple Internet.

I cut my losses the next day and informed the college that enough was enough.

Your ethical hacking will be reduced to about three or six months for one or two credits in a college year term. In one or two classes related to network security and IT security. You will find it extremely easy to destruct computer systems and networking. Defending against it? When the attack is configured and the weaponized code executes the computer or network you are defending is going to power down from within your Domain control matrix. You have no defense against that.

It is literally the one attack I learned and cherished. I wrote a paper on recovering Fidelity After the 9-11 attacks took them off line, off the markets and killed key people in their IT Staffing as well as certain Company Officers for a time. In addition to local on site backups and resources were destroyed.

Fidelity was the first to open three days on on 9-15 and answering bid and ask orders that morning before everyone else.

Defending against current modeern threats has evolved. It is never ending, a form of 24/7 warfare. If you don't watch it, it will burn you out faster than trucking will.

BTW should Wall Street get nuked and pernamently go off line on a live market trading day, there is a hot backup about 32 miles away in Jersey that has been fed by Laser Line of Sight and will take over within a few milliseconds to execute a orderly and fast market closure without any loss of data.

There are since then a handful of other sites online constantly mirroring the live activity so that terrorists cannot bring us down. It will be very hard to do so. Even if all NYC and Jersey was a smoking hole.

One of our staff members, @ethos, took classes while driving tanker full time and has now left trucking for a teaching and coaching career. I tagged him, so he may answer if he sees this.

Others have done other things, and others like @x1Heavy have have dealt with the issue. It's possible to be successful, but I wouldn't call it easy and it must be possible to get hired to do what you set out to do.

I think you might want to reevaluate your post. It might not have worked for you, but it does work. It just takes the wherewithal to see it through. I left the Air Force with an associate degree. Over time I got my BS. One of the reasons that made my forced retirement easier on me was my job offer in that safety dept. Would never have happened otherwise!

    I hear you.

Once I get some of the current storms out of the life I might take a few more classes for a handful of ideas. But ultimately I have to decide what I am going to do the next 12 years or so of my life. Which at this point is essentially nothing. (I would hate that.)

College is a first in my family. I noticed my siblings never went. Even though my parents told ME to go as soon I got out of high school until blue in the face. I aged out of my school at 20. A very old man among 18 year olds in my class. I was so sick of school and wanted OUT and away from authority etc. Plus the incessant school schedules.

Trucking was a form of salvation the problem is no one teaches young ones a #### thing about the industry as far as job retention etc. Hahn Transport botched one particular delivery in Rockville Fuel and Feed in Maryland and in so doing I incurred damage exceeding 10K against another company truck with a Plant Manager suit demanding things that are impossible.

I will never again be placed in that position as far as I am concerned. But I had to learn it by being fired, yelled at and so on. Education is something that is inadequate. Hahn paid it with 10K and two botched deliveries that made problems for a long standing account. A little training would have avoided that a long time ago.

Military on the other hand... that door was not open to me at all being deaf. In fact we just deployed the first 4 deaf ROTC infantry in our High School in Maryland engaged in Military Training without weapons per state policy. If they succeed then they will be at least one of the very first deaf ever to don the uniform of the United States Armed Forces. But they have to do it correct and perform flawless. Israel uses Deaf in Active Service all the time. Our Country does not.
