Does anyone know anything about the GMC C7500 (Kodiak) truck (GVW 33k) with the 7.8 L Isuzu. I believe that engine has cylinder liners and would be considered rebuildable, a plus over other small engines like the CAT C7, right?. What is the tallest rear end gear available in it? (The one I'm looking at has 3.90) I do know it can come with a 9 speed transmission. Any idea on fuel mileage? Suitability as a hotshot road tractor? (probably tag it at 54k)

The truck cited above is a 2008 model tractor, 300 hp version, 3.90 rear end, 9 speed.

I've located another C7500: 2007 model, 250 hp, 3.70 rear end, manual Eaton 6 speed transmission.

Still need some feedback on these Isuzu 7.8 L engines? What kind of fuel mileage might these trucks get pulling LTL freight? Anybody running these Class 7 or 8 Kodiaks/Topkicks?

The engine is good, know a couple people who have this truck running with this engine and have about 750k on both of them. One had headgasket problems but overall the real problem is who is now servicing them, GMC/Chev is out of the medium duty market from what my GMC dealer said and he won't even service what he sold.

Thanks Ridgeline! Good to hear a good report on that Isuzu engine. Maybe other OEM users of Isuzu engines could service the GM products?

I hope to hear some mpg numbers on these trucks being used as tractors?

Also hope to find out if the manual transmissions are considered OverDrive models? And especially if they are, could rear end gears be switched out to taller ones for OTR highway use and better mpg?

Sorry I didn't catch the using them as tractors thing.

I wouldn't do that, a class 6/7 would not be good for that on the road. The people I know who are using them are using them as expediter trucks, small sleepers and boxes on the back and one is maxed out at 26k and the other at 32k.

Honestly I would pick up a class 8 tractor for a lot of reasons. One is serviceability but also the power you need to pull a 54k load, Isuzu makes a great engine but comparing it to something that is intended for 54k GVCW, it can't do the job. I've got a FL80 with an ISC in it and when it is loaded, it has issues, it is maxed out on HP and larger than the Isuzu.

    Nottoway Thanks this.
