Did a small pick up yesterday at United Stationers in Walnut, CA.

Talk to the shipper and he tells me to back into door 18 and hands me a clear plastic bag with the lock and instructs me to remove red hose, install the lock and chock the tires.

I ask the guy how many times has a truck and/or trailer pulled away from the dock while someone was loading. He says it has probably happened 3 times in the last 30 years, so they now have a nationwide safety rules like this for when trucks come in to pick up.

This is the first I have ever heard of this in the 20yrs I've been doing this.

How many have you guys run into this in your travels?

In the past ive seen recivers require the driver to remain in the building during unload, keys in hand, had one ask for my keys, (told him if i give you my keys your keeping the truck) had one require you drop the trailer pull 10 feet up so they could put a pin lock on.... lots of weird stuff..

    It happens alot,
I was talking to another driver from my company while we got loaded, and he knew everything, and he told me all he knew.
This place didn't have dock lights and we were both outside talking, he heard his dock plate get removed, so he hopped in and pulled forward. Heck he knew it all.
Except that we were getting pallets of empty cans and they moved the dock plate so they could load the last 2 pallets.

I have run into this with probably 3 companies in the past year or 2. Prior to then, I hadn't seen this.

I actually went to one of those receivers today. The thing that gets me about these people is, they send a guy out with the glad hand lock.... but, he wont remove the hose off or put it back on the glad hand ... & he wont allow me to put the lock on or take it off the glad hand.
He has to put the lock on and take it off & I have to remove & reconnect the hose.

    I've been to one.

Had to give him my keys AND install the lock.

Now i could see that rare instance mentioned above happening with a van. But i pull a flat and 99% of my loads are on the lot NOT backed in to a dock.

Yep, one of the places I pick up uses glad hand locks. As for requiring the driver to remove the lines, it's simply so the dock isn't responsible if the lines crack while removing them.

Amazon. ..glad hand lock, unhook and pull 3ft up, wheel choke. Dolly support underneath trailer. And a guard sit in the passenger seat just staring at the driver till it's over

That's not the real reason United wants drivers to do it. I spent 4 years working for them
