You can go online and get your numbers but your MC will not go active until after your insurance is filed with FMCSA. It takes a while; mine took 10 days to go active after insurance filing some peoples have taken longer, Needless to say, you won't have active insurance until you buy your truck. Just make sure of your time frame before you get your numbers though, if insurance isn't filed shortly after, they will decline your MC application and then you will have more waiting time to get it reactivated again.

Can't you buy the cheapest hunk of junk truck you can find, use that to activate your MC, then simply switch over to your new truck once you get it?

I'm probably wrong but you need the dot and Mc # for any commercial vehicle for hire etc etc. Right
So my brother has an old penske box truck he picked up for like $2500 bucks. He does odd jobs with it. He was told any other truck he buys for commercial purposes will have the same numbers. So if you have the money. Theoretically you could buy an old hunk a junk and take care of all the paperwork and waiting time.
But once you buy your tractor who knows if the process will go any faster and what would you do with the old piece of crap. That most likely would be money wasted.
I'm just a company driver tho so ymmv

You can get MC without truck, but it won't be active without insurance. So if u buy a junk truck, just to activate the MC, you will be paying for insurance untill u get the truck you like, which might take some time

There is no point in getting your authority and paying for insurance until you are ready to start running. It is too expensive today for your insurance. If it were me, I would wait to activate your authority until you have a truck and then buy insurance.

    Bean Jr. Thanks this.
