How do you get any info at all about getting a job transporting containers to n from ports. Mainly in the Miami or Tampa area? Also if u wanted to haul containers to and from ports as an independent contractor, how would u go about this?

Well, I can tell you on the West Coast, there are brokers and companies with contracts that do the load bookings. To get started, just ask any container driver who to talk to.

Why don't you just try going to the sorce...go to the port...locate a container company...and ask them what you asked us...

They will lead you in the right direction...

If you have your own truck and authority...I don't think you even need a broker for containers...I think you just get your loads directly from say 'Crowley' or ect ect...
They dispatch the loads directly to you...I'm not 100% sure on that...

I did some more research and found some more container companies you can call or look up on the net and inquire about..here are a few..

    1. Hyundia
    2. Triton
    3. K-Line
    4. UASC
    5. CSAU
    6. Yang Ming
    7. Xtra international
    8. Cool
    9. UES
    10. GE sea co
    11. Tex

As the world economy grows...sea bound or inboud freight seems to be the one area in trucking that's staying pretty steady...

Most of these container companies contract everything to reliable brokers. Reliable brokers that have proven track records. You seniors feel free to correct me if am wrong. These container companies want that stuff booked before it hits the dock. Probably booked before it leaves original dock. Companies like Landstar that have thousands of trucks and reliable brokers move this stuff. Of course you can go on Landstars board and look for yourself. I recently started a business and have been dealing with styrofoam manufacturers all overs the world. I wasn't aware but the chinese actually own and control a lot of our railroads. So alot of this stuff is controlled solely by them probably of which they have brokers that run it. I know that if you want to run dock freight the first thing you will need to do is get your TWIX card. Otherwise you won't be allowed in the ports to begin with. When you get your twix ask around for port brokers.

Lets me and you learn together...I can find out tomorrow for certain maybe...

But if your a driver, with your own authority...do not alot of container companies dispatch directly to you?

In other words...they bi-pass brokers...and simply send billing info or trip infor to you...

I could be wrong...I'll try to find out more info in the next few days...

Over here; its not the ports that hire the truckers.. its other companies that go through the port that hires the drivers...

One requirement, is a MISC card (Port authority card here in Australia)

The port people, hire crane drivers and shuttle drivers... no truck drivers, they just unload the ships, put the containers in an X spot, and a truck will come for a container going to Y, but requires the X spot container, so they will fish it out...

You could always befriend a trucker that does that work, and sit with him for a day to see what its like.

And that's how drivers get ripped off...by having 'middle' men or agencies...

But I have good news for those who want to run container freight and who have own authority...

I was correct in my ascertion that with Crowley, you don't need a broker...

Crowley, and a few other container places, dispatch directly to you, the driver, the owner...there is no middle man with Crowley...unless you just happen to want one....

Unless you just want to pay a third party to pick up the phone for you and recieve a fax with load info on it....

Good info man! I thought there maybe some that did but I did not want to mislead you (or sound like an idiot). Make sure to check into driver seniority. These are guys that have been with those companies for awhile and get first pick on all the loads. Not to say that particular company does but you will suffer for the first few years if you run out and buy a truck and are running the loads no one else wants. I ran a rock truck and it was just like that. They new guys really starve!
