    Hi,

I know this topic has been discussed, but I wanted to see if I could get some opinions on my situation personally.

I am strongly considering investing $3-5k in CDL school to get my Class A license, as I believe truck driving will be a great fit for me. The problem is my driving record as of recently, as described below:

    1. At-fault accident from April 2015 (I rear ended a car that braked hard at a stop light), for which I was issued a careless driving ticket.

    2. Speeding ticket for 10-24 mph over the limit in August 2016. I was actually clocked doing 86 in a 55 (pretty bad, I know), but hired a lawyer to drop it down to 10-24mph over.

I know most companies look back at your driving record 3 years, so my plan is to wait until April 2018 to start CDL school. That way, the accident and careless driving ticket from April 2015 will hopefully have fallen off of my record and not affect my chances of being hired.

My question is, do you think I will still have a chance of getting hired by a company with the 10-24mph ticket on my 3 year record? I realize that I don't have a clean driving record, and would be grateful to be hired by any company, even the so-called bottom feeders. I just want to know that my investment in trucking school won't be a complete waste of money.

My other problem is that if I wait until April 2018, I will have been unemployed for a year since leaving my previous job in accounting. I realize that trucking companies frown on employment gaps, so do you think there will be a company out there that will give me a shot with this year of unemployment and the speeding ticket?

I guess I could always go back to accounting, but it's always been my dream to become a truck driver as I am an introvert, and really enjoy driving.

Sorry for the long post. I just wanted to fully explain my predicament.

The employment gap is not a problem. The careless and 10 to 24 over are big hurdles, not impossible.
State where you are from for @Chinatown to help you.

Thanks, I'm from NJ. Like I said, the careless driving ticket will be 3 years old when I go to apply, so hopefully it'll just be the 10-24 over that I will have to deal with.

You're hirable. One cab driver in NYC had around 15 tickets & fender benders and found a job after cdl school; pretty good job hauling produce out of California back to NYC.
You can try now to get a pre-hire from some companies and if you can't get any, just wait until April and try again. It's best to do the online application before any phone calls. Don't say anything about a speeding ticket being reduced either.
Do the applications and check "student" which means you will be a cdl school student. If the companies call, tell them you need a pre-hire to show the school and tell them the name of the school you will attend.
    Try these:
    TransAm
    Carolina Cargo
    Keep us posted!

Ever heard of the statement " a fool and his money are soon parted? Really really do your due diligence before going ahead and spending $3000 on driving fees, your best off going to a company first to see if they'll train you that way you'll know if your driving record will be an issue you will find as long as there's some clause in there training contract eg a cooling off period you can pull out of the deal before you start training with them. Just do a quick phone around with all the major carriers and ask them do they hire with 2 recent citations? Sometimes they will even post their driver requirements on the employment section of their website which usually gives you some idea of what traffic violations you can have and still be employed by them.

Geeezus, this last year I have seen so many trucks overturned, several dead people, waiting to be taken away. I'm hoping someone who wants to drive doesn't just think about the money, can you go 2500 miles a week for years on end without killing someone

At fault accident (BTW co's go back 7-10 yrs) but may just gig you for anything in the past three, and 24 over on speed (15 over in a truck is bad news) and no job for the previous year (can you explain why) to me is a problem. You may have to really knock on a lot of doors ......good luck
