So I'd like to get my CDL and I've been reading and researching so much that now I'm totally confused! Lol.
It seems like most folks think a community college program offers the best option for gaining the most knowledge and offering flexibility when looking for a future employer. However, it's also a more expensive route, and for me the nearest community college is 2 hours away in Tuscon, 4 hours round trip a day is a lot of wear and tear on my car and would make for a long day after classes. So now I'm thinking about company sponsored CDL training. Swift has CDL school in Phoenix which is not far from the town I live in, but then the reviews I see of Swift are so poor I'm hesitant to go there. I really don't care where in the country I attend a sponsored CDL class as long as I can feel confident I'm getting a decent education. I also understand that at least the first year of driving is not for making money as much as it is for gaining experience and knowledge of the job, so again mostly looking for the best ways to learn the most. I would sincerely appreciate any advice those of you with experience would be willing to share.

I bet @Chinatown will be along shortly to give you some options. Others may as well and you can also look in the jobs section.
Mer5622 Thanks this. -
Don't let the reviews on swift scare you off. Swift is as good as any place to start out Imo. You can stay there a couple years and then move on. There are plenty of drivers who have stayed with swift for many years (Lifers).

Another good thing is Swift doesn't have inward facing cameras so Ive heard.
Mer5622 Thanks this. -
In your situation it sounds like swift would be a fine starting point. They have a bad reputation because all the idiots make it bad. Just don’t be one of those idiots and you’ll be fine.

Thank you, sounds like good advice!

You can get a fast CDL at that quickie school in PHX, not sure how good they are, but if you do the CTI option below it doesn't matter.
Then take a training job with CTI, who has turnover so high that they average hiring a new driver every weekday, but they offer paid training in some locations if you have a CDL in hand, where you get ~17/hr to drive with a "trainer" in his truck for 6-8 weeks, then they issue you your own truck, at which point you are a practiced driver with tanker experience on your resume. The training is funded by grants from AZ Chamber of Commerce somehow.
After you're done with them, there are several competing dry bulk places always hiring because all dry bulk who hire you pay low, but OTOH offer more tanker experience for a little more money.
Or there's Southwest, who work with megas a lot and have reps from them showing up recruiting if you want the tedious nanny-corporate OTR life. I met a recruiter from one of the mega companies when I went in to check SW out, obvious sales liar. SW probably is an okay school, but really school is only to get you through testing, then the real learning begins.
You can also choose any CDL school anywhere, they can even test you there if they have 3rd party, then will give you a completion packet to take to MVD who will issue you a CDL. -
I lived up in show low and did the sponsored cdl with swift. Stayed for almost 2 years with them then moved on. I did their flatbed division only so cant speak for the reefer or van. But their flatbed program is a great way to get ur feet wet and learn the ropes. U can make money with swift if ur not lazy.
