12.7 pre-egr Detroit, 470hp (might tune it to 550 or so later on), 10 speed overdrive, 3.58, Low pro 22.5.
Mainly pull end dump, hopper, and hay occasionally in central America where its 90% flat, occasional hill pull. In 10th at 65 mph I'm revving right around 1550, which to me seems ideal. Average 6.0-6.5 depending on the day. Considering putting a 2.67 rear end or something in that range, run it in direct 9th gear. My calculations show that will put me around 65 mph at 1475 rpm. That's the speed and rpm I'd like to be at plus be in direct gear. And then have OD 10th gear to come home empty on if on interstate. Hoping to maximize mpg. Tell me why this idea is dumb and not worth it. Thanks for looking

Because you need a lower low gear to get it rolling without twisting the driveline up etc. to get the lower 1st gear you gotta loose overdrive.....or bite the bullet and put an 18 speed in it.
Your not going to gain what you think you willblack_dog106, haycarter, blairandgretchen and 7 others Thank this. -
Do not put a 2.67 in. You'll be throwing thrust washers, slipping clutches, etc.
To see what you're in store for, when you're loaded start out in 4th gear every time.black_dog106, AModelCat and Vampire Thank this. -
The high gear ratio and driving in direct only work if you have a 13 or 18 speed.
blairandgretchen Thanks this. -

JMO but in the long run your gona be better off doing as @wore out said and just put a 18 speed in
Your gonna have bad things happen if you drop down to 2.67 and try to get rolling loaded especially if your out in a field with a loaded welfare wagonblairandgretchen, Dino soar, Hammer166 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Calculate how long your recovery time is gonna be on the cost to change the rears …….vs hypothetical fuel savings
haycarter and jamespmack Thank this. -
Everything you wanna haul is going to be heavy and unfriendly in the wind. Most of it is going to come out of crappy terrain that will destroy a driveline if rears aren't low enough. You will get worse mileage with that fast gear.
blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
Money ahead to switch to 18/13, then re-evaluate, and 2.67 seems too low imo
blairandgretchen and Last Call Thank this. -
13 won't gain anything in this situation. 18 would, but 13 won't

I can say this too. That history has shown and proved in the ag hauling business that the lowest horsepower lowest geared slowest trucks are the most efficient and dependable in that field. With some exception to cattle hustling. That is why the bullwagons always ran 4.11’s but had 13,18,or twin stick 20 speed transmissions. Get rollin nice slow and easy and have the speed on the top too.
Dino soar, Diesel Dave and Last Call Thank this.
