Just curious, Anyone have any bad experiences with the aftermarket Gates or Dayco belt tensioners? Gates ones look pretty good. Made in Canada supposedly. About half the price of the Cat ones.

Gates does have a good name. I almost wouldn’t even consider them aftermarket.

Caterpillar doesn't make their own belt tensioners, they contract them out to the lowest bidder to make them, and than put them in a Caterpillar box and mark the price up 200%.

Same deal on the air compressors. They contract bendix to make their air compressors.

    Cat air compressor $1200

    Bendix air compressor $363

Caterpillar has really gone down the hole. I'm considering going aftermarket for most of the components for my next 3406E overhaul.

Thanks, I was kind of suspecting this was the case but wasn't positive. Always had good luck with gates hd belts..I knew the air compressors were Bendix.

It isn't always the lowest bidder, cat like cummins uses either Dayco or AJ Rose for their parts.

They set the OEM price, then there is a release for aftermarket sales, which is based on the OEM price.

Mark up from the dealer is based on their replacement/warranty costs, not the aftermarket pricing.

Get dayco or Gates, they come from one or another manufacturer, Dayco or Rose.

Or just buy new bearings if that’s all you need very cheap

That was my plan. I picked up a few bearings along with the serpentine belts. Got looking at the tensioners and I'm thinking the pivot bushing is going in one of them. Looks slightly tweaked. Belt has a slight squeal to it. Everything spins fine with the belts off but I'm just going to replace everything and be done with it
