I have been looking at a new radio. I like the 979 but the 959 is a tried and true rig.
It would appear that the biggest difference between the two, other than the smaller frame and lit up face plate is the lack of a frequency counter on the 979. Is that it?
I also see that the 979 has Mosfet finals. What exactly does that translate to in the form of functionality.
Question is, does the 979 have the same power and reliability as the 959 and can it be tuned up as much as the 959.
Thanks,
Dave

They both have the Mosfets. I've seen up to 28 watts out of a 959 with Mosfets. Mosfet are being used to replace the 1969 finals which are no longer being made. The 959 is the better and more reliable of the two.

I have a 979 and I love it. I have had it for six months or so now. I haven't had a single problem with it and I get out great, even with my amp turned off. I also has the variable power which is nice as well plus the single side band function.
I have never used a 959 but I got 979 because it fit better in my pickup truck because it is supposed to be a more compact size but it is still pretty close to regular radios in size i think. I have actually had compliments on how mine sounds before. Personally, I like the face plate. It makes the radio look really good and I also like the big meter but I beleive the 959 has the big meter also.
The SSB seems to work really well. I have made a lot of far off contacts on SSB while driving down the road as well as a lot of far off contacts during skip also while driving. The audio is very good. I like Cobra radios as well but I think if you compare the cobras that I have had to the galaxy's that i have had, the Cobras seem more noisy to see. The 979 has a good smooth kind of receive that I prefer over the Cobras.
It's a good radio. I got a good deal on it at the CB shop that we have here in town and I also run a palomar 225 with it and that seems to be working well with it. That variable power on the 979 really helps when running an amp. I just keep the power down and it seems to swing more and people I am talking to on the radio say that it sounds better with the variable power turned down when running the amp. Overall, I really like it but I guess I am biased too since I own one. -
959 is larger and frequency counter and the 979 is smaller and no frequency counter. Both good radio's.

Never had a radio with SSB. Is the frequency counter necessary for SSB operation?

the frequency counter is shot one number!!

Some sideband radios drift on sideband (some more than others) and a 6 digit counter will help you stay on frequency better but all a 5 digit will do is give you a ballpark. Here's a link to a good review of the 959,

and the 979,

I have a peak&tune 929 and i'm talking to a guy with an amplified Cobra 29 who's pushing power and we're heard pretty good, and my antenna set up isn't even set up the way I want it. The 929 is an awesome radio, if it was a 979, it would be better than any Cobra. Get the 979. The new Galaxy radios are very cool. The smaller radios make for a much more easier install. Who needs a frequency counter.
