GA ports authority

Never been in GA but been up in the northeast. It was always a relatively simple process; pay the fee, follow instructions, and be on your merry way.

Ports, in general, can be a huge clusterf**k, so be patient.

Things I wouldn't do...cuss the guard out, ram your truck into yard dog or escort, or murder the shipping office clerk ...that's just me though.

Just keep your yap shut unless spoken too. And mind your Ps and Qs. They are overly sensitive and hold grudges, Last I heard, I'm not allowed back to Seattle port.

 

NO FIREARMS ALLOWED IN THE PORTS. -- ANY PORT. EVER.

You will need a safety vest. If you don't have 1 they will probably have an old nasty one that they will very begrudgingly allow you to borrow, or maybe your escort will have 1 you can borrow. At the Jacksonville port some of the escorts have new ones they sell you at about 5x the normal rate....

Jax port escort rates are $50 hour or any part of an hour and it is usually CASH ONLY. I do not know what the rates are in Savannah but I expect they would be similar.

Expect EVERYTHING to take 2-4 times as long as you think it normally should take. Especially with an escort. Some of them give kickbacks to the port clerks and so forth for moving very slowly so they get to charge you more.

I have a TWIC and whenever a client mentions the port, my rate instantly goes up $50-75 or I do not accept the load.

Oh, and they close EARLY, like 3-4pm most of the time. And don't even begin to think your going to show up 15 minutes before closing and accomplish anything other than another visit tomorrow.

PRAY ALL your paperwork is 100% in order.... and even if it is... Pray some more....

Have your dispatchers number already in your phone at the top of the list.

Bring lunch (Leave in truck until you need it).
