What happens when your medical card expires in GA. If you don't keep it up to date does this mean you might lose your cdl and have to retake the test? If you don't plan on getting a commercial driver job for a year or so could you just let your CDL be suspended until you want to start driving again? Would you then be able to just go get another medical card and have your CDL reinstated? Or would there be any extra fees or penalties associated with this?

You will probably have some serious explaining to do when you apply for a job. First thing a company would think, did you let your medical card expire to keep from taking a drug test? Company would probably pass on hiring you.

You go here to self certify in GA.

    http://www.dds.ga.gov/commercial/commdata.aspx?con=1744171759&ty=com

If you plan on going idle than you can self certify into an exempted category like you help a farmer or use a truck occasionally for personal use.Self certifying is the key. Just don't ignore it.

If you haven't completed the self certification yet... you have until Jan 30, 2014. So there is a grey area until then one could slide if they never self certified.

Lose your CDL privileges and then you have to start from the beginning and take the written and driving test.

It's easier to just keep your certificate up like you keep your CDL up. I bet you can find a walkin clinic that does DOT physicals.

CVS Pharmacy/ Minute Clinic. DOT physicals are $79 there.

Honesty its better to keep your cdl updated even if you don't drive a truck. If it were me id do the physicals and that way you don't have to get a new test and physical done.

Your CDL is not valid without a current, up to date, medical card. You can also be issued an expensive ticket or even be taken to jail not having it because not having it means that your license is not valid.

I'm pretty sure he's talking an idle CDL. Under GA law he has until Jan 30, 2014 to play the game of no medical certificate. But the catcher there is when he passes school and goes down to the DMV for his CDL they'll probably ask for a certificate since they're implementing the new law.

If you don't plan on driving yet Toad, then why are you going to school? Do it all at once so you are fresh.

Rather then wait and find out all the what ifs,you should just keep your medical card up to date. It's only like $50.00..

Question...my b.f. has an old cdl from Georgia... so old he didnt even need a medical cert. We're in Texas right now, he really doesnt need a cdl, he's retired. Is his license good now, doesnt renew until next April. Should he get a Ga excemption?
    Thanks

In CA if your medical card expires, you license is just downgraded a class C. You have up to a year to re-submit you medical form without penalty then you loose your CDL and have to start over.

I should have specified.. is my b.f.'s regular driver's license still good, he's not going to drive anything bigger than his 27' rv and his bike.
I just need to know if he is stopped, could he get a ticket for no med cert/license invalid just because he's had a cdl on his license for centuries.....
Georgia didn't require any tests of certs when he got his license, I think back in the 60's.
    thanks
