    Hi, I'm looking into getting my Class B permit but, not alot of companies in my area will hire or take on someone with just a Permit or with a Class B but, no "seat time". I can't go over the road due to our son''s health conditions. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I'm in the Harrisburg, PA area .

    I can't help you with suggestions for employment. However i'm curious as to why you want to go through this whole process of getting an B CDL. With an A CDL you can still operate class B vehicles (not buses School or otherwise) and you might land a great job driving an class A vehicle. The testing only involves 1 additional test and the driving test has a bit more to it. I'm not saying your wrong. I'm just wondering.

    Because , here in PA you have to provide your own truck for the skills test and it'd be easier (and more cost effective)for me to rent a Class B trk (straight truck)

    Here in PA, you have to provide your own trk for the skills testing and it'd be more cost effective for me to go the Class B route because, I've already checked into it and it'll be cheaper for me to Rent a Class B "straight trk".

    Already checked into the UPS Route and I'd have to be a dock worker with no benefits for an undesclosed amount of time before I could bid on a driving job with benefits.

    If you can't afford to attend a trucking school like All State...or don't want to be committed a year to a Mega Carrier...you might want to look into an LTL or Foodservice company that has an apprenticeship program or dock to driver program.

    Google LTL companies around Harrisburg. FedEx Freight and FedEx Express has apprenticeship programs where they'll pay for your CDL. You'll have to start off on the docks though. Same with YRC, Estes Express Lines, A Duie Pyle, ABF, ODFL, etc., etc.

    Many Foodservice companies will help you get your CDL too. McLane Foodservice has they're own training academy. Pepsi and Coke is known to help get your CDL too.

    If you wanna go the Non CDL route, try looking at UPS, USPS, FedEx Express and DHL for Package delivery driver. Stay away from the so called independent contractor scam that FedEx Ground or many of the Bread Truck Companies like Flowers Foods use. You can also check out Bread and Chip companies like Bimbo Bakeries, Frito Lay, Wise Chips, etc., to become a Route Sales Driver. And many Foodservice DSD (Direct Store Delivery) us Non CDL Straight Trucks. Try looking into the various Foodservice companies out there like US Foods, Sysco, McLane, GFS, etc., or Nestle, Jack & Jill Ice Cream, Dietz & Watson, maybe Pepsi and Coke, Milk Haulers like Dean Foods, Dairy Pure, Tuscan, HP Hood, Penn Maid, Clover Farms, Crowley, Rosenberger, Lehigh Valley, etc. Good luck.

    Before I invested money I would check out a tech school. Just saying check into all aspects of this. You might well thank yourself for doing it.

    Truck Washer/Fueler -The SYGMA Network, Inc. - Harrisburg, PA
    Apply on Company website.
    LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION Valid driver's license class c required class A CDL preferred
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    In addition, Sygma Network also has a drivers position and all you need is a CDL-A Permit. You ride along and run teams with an experienced driver and he helps you qualify for your CDL-A.
    Not sure what this position is called, but think it's "Driver Associate" or "Driver Trainee" or "Driver Helper."
