If the average tractor weighs roughly 25k or so, wouldn’t a 9000 gallon tanker holding any liquid weighing over 6ppg put that truck over the legal weight limit of 80k?

If the average did way 25k yes but the average tractor is not weighing 25k. My empty weight on my tanker & tractor is close to 34k. My tank is 7000 gallons. My tractor is close to 20k because it has a pumping unit & apu.

So I’m a little lost as to how some tankers are holding 9-13k gallons at say 6ppg or more. That’s putting you clean over 60k lbs on the trailer alone.

With a tractor weighing 20k alone isn’t that illegal technically?

Your assuming that are loading the full 9k-13k( those trailers are mainly 3 compartments loading various amounts) with with a product weighing 6ppg . I'm usually loading 45k or less. If you see a 3 axle tank trailer they are loading heavy.

So the outfit I’m signing onto has a few tankers with more axels. 13k. Hauling fuel.

What’s the point in having a tanker that size if filling it completely would put you over weight? Barring any permits for overweight?

They have the permits if they are loading heavy with fuel. They should go over that with you in orientation.

Generally speaking, if a transport(tanker) trailer is legally loaded with diesel fuel, it is loaded with 7,000-7,200 gallons. Gasoline will be in the 8,000-8,300 gallon range. This based on using daycabs.
The compartments on the trailers vary in size, to give flexibility in loading different products if needed.

So I’ll potentially pretty much never see fully loading a 9-13k trailer and have to worry about being overweight?

What kind of tractor do you have? My mid roof Mack weighs 27,700 with a 7500 gal tank. Compartment trailer adds around 1,200. I don't haul fuel but the general idea of loading your own trailer is, scale in, get a gallon estimate and load to that amount which will put you at or under 80k. Or load on a scale. I've never hauled a fully loaded tanker since I've been driving. Unless you're hauling wax you'll always have air space in the trailer
