    Hi guys,

wanted to ask is there a way you can patch an aluminum fuel tank yourself the proper way? Hundred people - 100 different opinions, so not really sure what to do. The hole itself is really tiny 2-3 mm on the upper half of the tank but because of it I am using only one tank and my fuel mileage got worse because of it. JB weld, Quick steel, something else?

Also I have noticed I have a small leak from the water pump. Does that stuff called leak stop do any good? Leak is not bad, about every day I ad one quart of coolant and Im fine, but question is what to do in long term

    Thanks

stop leak may or may not work. but it's very good at plugging radiators and heater cores also. best alternative is to fix the leak.

jb weld is very good on gas leaks. don't know if it will hold on diesel though. i would take a beer or soda can. cut out a section to put over the hole. along with some tape to hold it in place. kind of like a band aid patch. and then cover completely with jb weld.

i've used it for gas leak on the fuel switch and holes in mufflers on my motorcycle.

i tried the quick steel and that crap didn't last half a day. on the gas AND hte exhaust.

water pump leak.....look on the bottom of the pump and there is a "weep hole", may be leaking from there, easy fix. but i would fix the pump leak NOW as it may be a gasket failing and you may get stranded on the road somewhere.

fuel tank leak.....how did your fuel milage get worse using only one tank??? anyway... since your only using 1 tank, remove the other tank (not as hard as it sounds) and leave it with a welder to get fixed. should cost less than $150

I had a small hole under one of the fuel tank straps on my freightliner (like so small you could only see where the fuel was soaking out), I used jb weld on it must be 2 years ago now, it has not leaked since. 2-3mm I would give it a try especially if it is on the upper part.

i know i had a bad leak under one of the straps as well had to run off one tank only. but i had to pull it off and have it patched up with a piece or aluminum minew was on the lower half the straps were pretty loose i guess stuff had gotten underneath them this was on my last 2000 classic.

You could "rig" it with all the backyard JB Weld, Bondo, Oatmeal tricks in the world but bottom line, when your half **s way doesnt work you just lost $400 worth of fuel to save the $200 it cost to have a welder put a bead on it. You dont even have to drain the tanks, it will take 20 minutes.... Do it right.

So you want a very cheap fix for your fuel tank?

You do realise that if the cheap fix doesn't work,it can cost you 10 times more then if you do a proper fix on the tank?:biggrin_25513:

Are you planning to sell the truck in the next year?
Saving on repairs allways come back to bite you.(which is what Guntoter posted at the time i typed this)

    my 2 cents.

Oh, and the water pump. If its weeping from the little hole in the bottom of the pump, it needs a pump, you can NOT fix it with stop leak (or any sealer). That hole is there because the water needs a place to go when it is getting past the seal and bearings on the pump, sealer wont fix it unless its only a gasket leaking (not likely).

Well guys thanks for your effort.

I did a little research tonight and it seems like I will need a new pump when I come back to chi city :) Quoted 9 Benjamins for parts and labor. As far as the fuel tank hole, I will give a chance to JB weld, bc We are trying to find a welder in Chicago. You know how it works everybody says o sure I know a guy I know this I know that, but when you need a guy, nobody has his phone number. If it doesnt work, oh well there is a huge place in Milwaukee thats has almost everything for semi trucks. Sort of a junk yard. And prices are really good. And I know how to replace a fuel tank. At least I can replace a something myself on my truck. BTW is it too hard to replace a water pump on a Volvo ved12 engine?

Previous owner let the rubber insulators that go between the tank and the stainless bands get too ratty. The tank wound up getting some pin holes in it at the top. I put JB on there a couple of years ago and that's worked good. I have also seen a guy use and two part epoxy and a piece of mud flap. I told the guy it won't last a week. Ugly as hell but it's been on the bottom of the tank for 5 years LOL.
