    Hello,
Can anyone tell me, is there a formula to measure your fuel tanks and calculate their fuel capacity? The tanks do not have it engraved (as far as I can see) or tagged of their respective capacities. The previous owner did not know either. It's an 03 Volvo VNM with the small tank on driver's side and large tank on passenger side. In fuelling, my guesstimate is 100 gallons (large) and 35 to 50 gallons (small). Problem is a guesstimate is exactly that, "a guess"! Does the VIN number help with this information? Any input is appreciated!!!

    Thanks,
    Tee

Dealer can tell from the vin# what tanks were put on the truck when it was built......

I've never seen a 35gal tank on a truck it has to be at least a 55 gal....

Thanks Cat! I appreciate the info. Yeah 35 gallons seems to be a bit small too!

Or you could take a tape measure and get the length and diameter of the tank. If it's been a while since the 9th grade, Google volume of a cylinder. Rember, radius is half the diameter. Plug length and radius in the online calculator, it will give u vol in cubic inches. Now, multipy that number times .004329 to get us gallon .

Run it until its almost empty and then note how much fuel you put into it?
    My Volvo has 2 x 150
When the mechanical gauge reads near empty, and the electronic gauge says I have like 20 gallons left, I typically put 220 gallons in it, and the electronic gauge will say I have 284 gallons. The mechanical reads full, but only briefly, and no its not running out on the highway. I think the most accurate is the electronic that tells me fuel used. I'm sure there is 30 or 40 gallons rolling around in there when it reads empty, I've looked and can see several inches of fuel above the pick-ups, but when the electronic says empty, the mechanical says empty, the fuel warning light is on, its hard to continue on. Cause if I were to run out, I'd have a hard time coping with being that stupid.

Google tank capacity calculator. Enter your dimensions and walla. I had one saved on my phone. Gallons by the 1/4" handy when the gauge is off or quits working while on the road.

20160114_200406.jpg This is full tanks minus 10 gallons
    ( 280 ) gallons. 280 is max. 20160118_101531.jpg That's fuel used. 20160118_101521.jpg
That's the MPG, farking 200 mile wind storm took a bite. 78,600 gross.

See there is 50 or so gallons between tanks that just kinda always stays in there. I put in 215 at the pump.
