Volvo trucks tend to be a little heavier because they are the only manufacturer to build their cabs with integrated sleepers both out of high strength steel whereas the rest use aluminum.
(Except Volvo bought Mack and now their cabs are steel but sleepers are bolt on aluminum.)
Put a magnet up to each make door, cab and sleeper to see for yourself.
While close, Volvos typically do not get as good of fuel economy as Pacaar products in my experience hauling the same wagon, same distance, same cargo weight.
I assume due to the extra weight of the truck itself? hard telling not knowing.
However, the Volvo outperformed the Petes hands down. It pulls and shifts better.
Our fleet is 100 percent 2018-19 Pete 579, but Nextran gave us a loaner Volvo to test because most of our Petes spend too much time in the shop due to DPF issues.
We found the fuel cost difference is negligible so it really boils down to which truck you like better.
Some people are just brand loyal no matter what, it's personal preference.
