Not sure about legal but I'm sure it wouldn't last long there.
OldeSkool, FearTheCorn, SHO-TYME and 1 other person Thank this. -
Not according to the safety man. It must be in your side box and placarded with a BOL. Our little 5 gallon external fuel tanks for the pump were placarded and we had a BOL in the truck papers for the fuel.
That may only be the carrier knee jerking too. Dunno.......but I'll betcha deputy dawg would nail you for a fuel can strapped to the catwalk.

If it's not paid freight, and secured correctly, I don't see the issue - would be no different to carrying fuel additives, oil etc . . . ?
truckon Thanks this. -
The cat walk ain't for carrying anything, but, it's probably 50/50 if you'd get cited. Kinda' like the bungee cord thing to secure dunnage ..ain't legal, but is overlooked half the time.
Lav-25 Thanks this. -
Please show me where you'd placard 5 gallons of fuel?
Walk Among Us, Oxbow, Rugerfan and 8 others Thank this. -
I actually thought he was nuts on several issues over the years, but I didn't argue as long as he paid ....ya?18WheelerHustle and Pmracing Thank this. -
When I worked for this tanker company I had fuel in a container tied to the cat walk to clean the hose after unloading hot asphalt.I crossed the South Dakota scale twice a day and they never said anything.

Anything less than 1000 pounds I think doesn't need placard, it may be 100 pounds. Including weight of package. Not sure about rules of having it secured to the catwalk.

You have to have a DOT approved container and secure it on the cat walk.
A dot approved container has loops to protect the top/outlet of it if it falls off the truck.
If it is gas, then red, if it is diesel, then yellow.
If you go to the great state of CARB (aka California), I don't know what you need to be legal there.
