I work for a small company that sells grain bins and we're about to upgrade to an actual semi (we/ve used a 2-ton with goosenecks for 30 years). I found a Freightliner M2 112 not far from us and wanted to see if anyone had any advice/expereince with them. We're looking to haul around 40,000lbs on a flatbed aluminium.
2009 M2 112 tractor
Mercedes Benz 450hp
5-2 Eaton rear
Tandem Axle (52,000 GVWR)
Tahnks for any advice!

it is very simple truck with small cab. really, OM460 is a good engine, but needs some skilled mechanics.
it it PLD engine with more complicated EGR system. But I'd say it is a good engine. Not popular in Europe becouse Actros was made for V-designed engine and Axor Cabover got smaller cab and customers prefere bigger cab, so more this engines in buses then in trucks in Europe. Is it EPA 2007 ore EPA2010 engine? EPA 2010 engine is SCR (also called DEF ore blue tech engine) and as I can see upgrated to Euro-IV and Euro-V engines got no MPG gain like new OM471 so try to avoid DEF engine.
Tranny and axels this truck shares with century class.
Cab is small, really small, good as daycab but sleeper is small like in European small cabovers, like Atego, and I can see sleeper design is in Atego style. good thing is rear view window, it helps backing with flatbed.
Usually M2 got crystal lence headlamps, not compatible with columbia and no round lamps, like on century class. It is not a problem in the USA, but here this parts may be available in a week ore longer but century class hood and cab parts are all time available.
Hood is short so to change cyl #5 and 6# gasket are some pain, gym and acrobatics.
Wheelbase of M2 is usually short like on european trucks so menuvrability is good, really good.
Imo, good choise for medium range ore urban trucking, where full size trucktor is like a clumsy elephant in glass store. -
OK, stay away from an M2. An M2 was Freightliner's first attempt at "real" multiplexing and it was a disaster. The MBE 4000 (or OM460 as the European called it) is not a good engine but it's not terrible either. It depends on your expected run. It was not built as an OTR engine and suffers when it's demanded to fill that roll. If you like coolant and fuel leaks and random windshield wiper engagement, this is the truck for you. I'm not a pissy former owner...........I've worked on a lot of them.

have a fleet of m2.all have random wiper engagement.what is the usual cause?

Since you are in Ohio, you might consider an M2 or even a Columbia glider kit truck with a pre-emission engine in it. You will avoid a lot of the engine issues and save a ton of cash as well. Freightliner offers the M2 and the Columbia as gliders. I have a Columbia on order now and saved roughly $40,000 off the cost of a comparable new emission truck. If you do California, this is all moot. But if you are staying mostly in the Midwest, then it is a smart option. You should be able to get one of the remanned smaller Cat or Detroit pre-emission engines in the M2. But you might be better off just going with a Columbia and spec'ing it for what you are doing. Even a Columbia glider, with a pre-emission engine, will be cheaper than one of the new trucks with all that emission junk. And a lot less headaches.
